Ben 'Duracell' Jones ( born 12 June 1982) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 2006-2018. He held multiple titles in three weight classes.
Early life
Ben 'Duracell' Jones was born in the Crawley area of West Sussex on 12 June 1982, to British parents. He grew up in the Crawley area for most of his childhood, and attended Thomas Bennet's Community College in Crawley, West Sussex.[2]
Career
Amateur career
At the age of eight, Jones started boxing at Crawley amateur boxing club. It wasn't until the age of 11 years old that Ben made his first amateur bout, which lead him onto competing in 61 amateur fights where he won 42. Jones was also an England boxing rep but unfortunately never competed for England. Jones's amateur record was 42-19.
Professional career
Early Career at Super Featherweight
Based in Crawley, Jones turned professional in 2006, age 24. In his first fight he defeated Carl Allen via a points decision (PTS). In 2006 to 2009 Jones thought another ten times, winning eight out of the ten fights. With a memorable fight against Ibrar Riyaz who he thought against and won his International Masters.[3] [4]
English Super Feather title
Jones had to wait until 2011 under the management of Maloney's Fight Factory to compete for his first title fight. He come up against a strong opponent in Akaash Bhatia, which was stopped in the eighth round by the referee on a technical decision (TD) with Jones coming off as the winner.[5] [6]
Inter - Continental Super Feather Title
Jones was back in the ring for the first time after his English Super Feather title, against Stephen Smith for the inter continental super featherweight title. Fast forward three years and Jones was back on the canvas taking his second shot at getting his hands on the inter continental super featherweight belt. Jones went head to head with Czech boxer Martin Parlagi, Being knocked down in the first round and getting back up Jones went the full ten rounds with the Czech and won the fight on a unanimous decision (UD).[7] [8]
International Lightweight Title
Coming off the back of a loss to Stephen Smith, Jones fought against fellow British boxer Jamie Speight for the International lightweight title. Jones stopped Speight in the sixth round with a technical knockout (TKO). Jones became the new international lightweight champion of the world. [9]
European Super Featherweight Title
Jones, now being managed by Assassin Promotions, was on the hunt for his third title belt in 2013 and it was Scottish champion Kris Hughes that stood in his way. Jones & Hughes went the full twelve rounds with Jones being given the unanimous decision (UD) & Becoming the new European Super Featherweight in the world.[10] [11]
The Later stages of Ben 'Duracell' Jones Career
After winning the inter - continental super featherweight title in 2015 Jones went onto fight in five more professional fights before calling it day and hanging up those successful boxing gloves. Those five last fights were against the likes of Slovakian boxer Elemir Rafael, Mexican boxer Jesus Antonio Rios, Nicaraguan boxer Carlos Osorio, British boxer Jason Cunningham & British boxer Reece Bellotti which was for the IBA World Super Featherweight title, Which marked the end of Jones's professional boxing career.
