Chng Nai Wee (b. 1969) is an artist and eye surgeon in Singapore. He graduated with Honors in Medicine and Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1993) and Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore (1999). He also trained in western painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1986 to 1987 and studied in Yale University School of Architecture (1999, 2004 & 2014) as a graduate student. His art practice draws inspiration from his unique background in Biomedical Sciences, Design, and Information Technology.

Art

Chng’s work was included in the landmark Sculpture in Singapore exhibition at the National Museum Art Gallery in 1991, which also included works from artists such as Tang Da Wu, Ng Eng Teng and Han Sai Por. Chng showed Sin of Apathy, an installation featuring 12 videos of people pleading for help.[1] This was one of the earliest examples of video art in Singapore. The work was also part of a larger shift in Singapore towards socially engaged art, which has most often been discussed with respect to The Artists’ Village.[citation needed]

On 31 Dec of the same year, he opened his first solo exhibition, also at the National Museum Art Gallery. Simply titled New Works, it presented 26 works in a variety of media, ranging from painting to sculpture and video.[2] The exhibition listing described it as “neo-cubistic sculptures; works founded on electronic circuitry and the organic world of microbiology; and video technology.”[3] His second solo exhibition at SweeGuan Gallery presented 35 works, including an origami sculpture made from photographs, which joined other paintings and sculptures. At this point, having worked as a medical doctor for several years, Chng’s art practice had found a clear focus on biology and histology.Template:Peacock inline

Chng had an important solo exhibition Biotechnics at the Substation in 1998, which looked at medical science and technology and provided early commentary on the development of Artificial Intelligence.[4] He subsequently received the Young Artist Award, the most prestigious recognition for artists below 35, from the National Arts Council in 1999.[5]
