Darryn Melerine (New Orleans, La October 10, 1970) has been involved in hurricane recovery efforts in Louisiana, most notably during Hurricanes Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Laura (2020). He is also a New Orleans-based martial artist and model.

Biography

Hurricane Katrina

Melerine was featured in several articles by the The New York Times shortly after the flooding in New Orleans that was caused by Hurricane Katrina. The articles detail attempts by residents to gather possessions from their homes, which were damaged in the flood. Melerine lost his home and possessions due to Hurricane Katrina.[1][2][3]

Hurricane Laura

Melerine was again featured in a New York Times article shortly after Hurricane Laura made landfall and caused widespread damage in Southwest Louisiana, mainly in Lake Charles, Louisiana|Lake Charles. Melerine states that losing his home in Katrina pulled him to help those in need in Lake Charles.[4][5]

Martial arts

Melerine holds rank as a 5th Dan (Go Dan/Renshi) / 5th Degree Black Belt in Minami Ryu Jujutsu and is recognized by worldwide organizations[6][7] and publications.[8] He travels to conduct classes, seminars and/or clinics with other traditional martial arts organizations[9] (specifically Budoshin Ju-Jitsu), mixed martial arts competitors, professional athletes, law enforcement agencies, and military armed forces, and performs self-defense, women’s self-defense, and anti-bullying clinics and demonstrations for corporations.

Modeling

Melerine works as a brand ambassador and social media influencer.[10] He has appeared in multiple television, print, and online video campaigns for local and national brands.[11][12][13]
