Debayan Deb is an accomplished Indian researcher, computer scientist, and entrepreneur, known for his work in the field of artificial intelligence.[1] He is the founder, president, and CEO of LENS Corporation,[2] a research company focused on providing AI-powered solutions for businesses.[3][4]

Dr. Deb is a highly cited researcher in the field of biometrics. His contributions to the field of AI have been widely recognized, and he serves as a program committee member for leading conferences such as CVPR and ICCV. He has also been named one of the "Top 10 AI Influencers to Follow in 2021" in Analytics Insight.[5][6]

Early life and Education

Dr. Deb was born and raised in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. His family later moved to Michigan, United States, after his father, Kalyanmoy Deb, was appointed as the Herman E. & Ruth J. Koenig Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering at Michigan State University.[7]

Dr. Deb developed a keen interest in computer vision and artificial intelligence during his undergraduate studies. In 2012, he enrolled at Michigan State University to pursue his bachelor's degree in computer science, which he completed in 2016. Dr. Deb continued his studies at the university by pursuing a Ph.D. with Dr. Anil K. Jain, one of the pioneers of modern-day biometrics, and received his degree in 2021. His Ph.D. thesis was titled, “Towards Robust and Secure Face Recognition: Defense Against Physical and Digital Attacks.”[8]

While pursuing his education at the university, Dr. Deb participated in several internships at companies such as Red Cedar Technology, Rank One Computing, NEC Laboratories America, Inc., and Lenovo. Additionally, under the guidance of Dr. Anil K. Jain, Dr. Deb was involved in several research projects focused on developing artificial intelligence-powered solutions and applications. These projects included PrimNet, a tool designed to combat wildlife trafficking, Infant-Prints, an infant fingerprint recognition system, and the Intelligent Real World Text Recognition app, which uses image recognition to identify objects and execute tasks.[9]

Career

During his tenure at Michigan State University, Dr. Deb realized the substantial differences between the requirements of academia and industry. In academia, the focus is primarily on improving the accuracy of the systems, whereas in the industry, operational efficiency is crucial. To bridge this gap, Dr. Deb conceptualized the idea of establishing LENS Corporation.[10] Founded in 2016, the company is dedicated to developing and providing innovative artificial intelligence solutions for businesses. It is headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, and is a leader in cutting-edge and trustworthy AI systems, pioneering the way for creating explainable and universally intelligent solutions. Currently, Dr. Deb serves as the President and CEO of the company.[11][12]

Dr. Deb is a highly-regarded researcher, with over 24 publications, an h-index of 13, and more than 1300 citations on Google Scholar, a considerable number of which are attributed to his work in pattern recognition, computer vision, and machine learning within biometrics. Additionally, he also holds three US patents in his name.[13]

Since 2020, Dr. Deb has been serving as a program committee member for leading conferences such as CVPR and ICCV, and he also reviews manuscripts for prestigious journals, including IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics & Security and IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.[14][15]
