Farooq Amin[1] is a Kashmiri businessman who currently serves as the CEO of Kanwal Foods and Spices (I) Pvt. Ltd. which is an Fast-moving FMCG company based originally out of district Anantnag in Jammu & Kashmir.[2] He serves as an office-bearer on various trade bodies. [3][4][5][6][7][8]

Affiliations

In 2018, he was elected as the General Secretary of the apex trade body, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industries (KCC&I).[9][10][11] He has earlier served as Executive Member of KCC&I.[12] Besides this, he was also elected as the CII (J&K Council) in Feb, 2020.[4][5] As a member of various trade bodies, he has represented the issues being faced by the business community in Jammu & Kashmir.[13][14][15][16] In 2018, Amin was named as a member of the Board of Directors of the Khadi & Village Industries Board (KVIB) of the Government of Jammu & Kashmir.[17][18][19][20][21] He was recently part of a high-level Indian delegation to Dubai, showcasing Kashmiri products at the UAE-India Food Security Summit, 2020.[22]

In the past, he has been part of the board of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology SKUAST, Kashmir which is the government's premier institute for agricultural research.[5] Under the Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu & Kashmir, Amin was appointed to the state government's Directorate of Employment's Overseas Labour board (formally known as State Overseas Employment Corporation).[5][23]

He has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Jammu & Kashmir Advisory Board for the Development of Kisans, a body which is tasked with improving the plight of farmers.[24]

Early Life & Education

He was born and educated in South Kashmir's Anantnag district into a business family. His father, Muhammad Amin, who is the Chairman of the Kanwal Group, started the company in 1977.[25] As per a 2015 interview, he had joined his father's business as a kid, going from shopkeeper to supervisor to Manager, and, finally Director of Sales & Marketing.[25]

Awards

In 2018, he became the second Kashmiri to bag the National Award for Entrepreneurship in Micro & Small Enterprises engaged in manufacturing, at a function in New Delhi which was presided over by the then Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.[3] Kanwal brand, and as its head, Farooq Amin, have received several awards.[26][27][28][29] As per the company website, the brand has won the Gem of India Award (1998), Rashtriya Gaurav Award (1998), Udyog Patra Award (1999), Rashtriya Udyog Shiromini Award (2000), National Quality Excellence Award (2002), KCC&I Best Industrialist Award (2006-07), National Quality Excellence Award (2008), Best Upcoming Industrialist Award (2008), ITID National Quality Excellence Award (2008), etc.[30][31]

Sports and CSR Activities

Under its Corporate social responsibility|Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the group runs Kanwal Sports Club which has its own cricket, hockey and football teams.[32][33][34] Farooq Amin is the chief patron of the Kanwal Sports Club.[35] He is also the President of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association|JKCA-affiliated District Cricket Association, Anantnag to which he was elected in June, 2019.[36][37]

In 2013, he, along with other top industrialists of Kashmir, laid the foundation of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Premier League (JKCPL) along the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL).[38][39] He is the CEO of the JKCPL and its most prominent patron.[40][41][42][43] He owns the JKCPL team Kanwal Tigers[40] which regularly participates in T-20 tournaments within and outside the state.[44][45][46][47][48][34][49][50][33] Indian cricketer Parvez Rasool has played for Kanwal Tigers on several occasions.[46][51][47][41]
