James Rice (born 27th December, 1987) is an English writer.[1]
Education and Career
Rice completed a masters in Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University in 2012.[2] While at university, Rice played bass and sang in alternative rock band Endeci.[3] He has lectured and led seminars at Liverpool John Moores University for a number of years.
His debut novel Alice and the Fly (Hodder & Stoughton, 2015) is the story of a teenager who suffers from arachnophobia and becomes obsessed with a girl, Alice and dreams of running away with her. The first chapter of the novel won the Writing On The Wall Festival’s novel-writing competition ‘Pulp Idol’ in 2010.[4]
Reception
Rice's first novel was well received.
In her positive review for the The Guardian Clare Allen notes "This is a novel about loneliness, and Rice vividly evokes the isolation of all those trapped inside the need to present a socially valid exterior . . . an oddly uplifting novel."[5]
The writer and director Helen Walsh wrote "One of the most stunning debuts I've read in a long time. The talent behind it is huge."[6]
Publishers Weekly praised the novel for "maintaining an atmosphere of increasing dread" and wrote "In the heartbreaking ending, Rice poses compelling questions about guilt, responsibility, and the culture of objectification that lead to Greg’s final acts."[7]
