Mike Sawitzke is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, composer, and audio engineer based in Los Angeles, California. He is a long time member of the indie-rock band Eels (band) as well as a touring member of the indie/roots band Dispatch (band).
Early Life
Sawitzke was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His family moved to Tempe, Arizona when he was 7. He joined the Elementary school band and began learning to play trumpet. Soon after he started playing guitar, bass, drums, french horn, and piano. He attended the University of Arizona and completed a bachelors degree in Classical Guitar Performance and then moved to Los Angeles where he completed a Masters Degree in Studio/Jazz guitar at The University of Southern California..[1]
Career
Soon after moving to Los Angeles, Sawitzke began working in studios around LA as an audio engineer, guitar player, and television composer. His work with film composer Lyle Workman lead to him meeting and working with Eels leader Mark Oliver Everett (aka E). Sawitzke began working with E on Eels records and ultimately being asked to join the band, under the nickname P-Boo.[2] Sawitzke has toured extensively with Eels, recorded and mixed records, and co-written songs such as the singles Today Is The Day[3] and Who You Say You Are[4]
On an Eels tour in 2011, Sawitzke met songwriter, composer, and producer John Dragonetti who was performing as the support act for the Eels tour in his band The Submarines[5]. Sawitzke and Dragonetti soon became friends and collaborators including working on the debut album of Communicant’s Dylan Gardner, Adventures in Real Time[6] and co-producing, performing on, and mixing the Dispatch records America Location 12, Location 13, and Break Our Fall. Sawitzke’s relationship with Dispatch ultimately lead to him becoming a touring member of the band.[7]
