Paul Loren is an American musician and singer-songwriter, currently based in Brooklyn. His sound combines elements of classic American music, influenced mostly by 50’s and 60’s pop, soul and country, while adding his own contemporary twist.[1]

Early Life

Paul Loren (born February 14, 1984), grew up on Long Island, New York to an Italian-American family who nurtured in him a real appreciation for music and the arts.[2] His parents met at a resort in the Catskill Mountains, where his earliest memories of music and show business were formed.[3] Loren started singing at 3 years old, along with the Frankie Valli and Billy Joel records his mother would play, and he started playing piano at 4 years old.[4][5]

Career

Loren launched his solo career with a number of sold-out shows in New York City at famed venue Joe's Pub with his ‘One-Night Only Band’ in 2014.[6] His first solo single, “All By Myself,” released in 2015, was supported by radio stations Lightning 100|Lighting100 in Nashville, SiriusXM’s The Pulse, WCOO/Charleston and KPND/Spokane, among others.[6] A six-song debut EP came in 2016, Paul Loren Is…Available!, featuring swing-era covers of classic songs by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen.[7]

2017 saw the release of the single and video for the original song, “I Know A Place,” inspired by Civil Rights-era anthems and evoking the somber hope of Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World.”[4] A slew of singles followed, including the 50’s-inspired “(Gonna Take) A Little Time,” with its accompanying video filmed at Brooklyn’s The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club and premiering on Parade.com.[8]

During this time, Loren was selected by Jennifer Lopez to perform at her Birthday Gala in Las Vegas; appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon|The Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon; partnered with The Ryan Seacrest Foundation; performed at the legendary Stax Museum of American Soul Music|STAX Museum in Memphis Tennessee; and recorded in the world-renowned Sun Studio.[9] He opened for and supported touring artists including: The Temptations; singer-songwriter Brendan James; American Idol Winner Taylor Hicks; folk singer and guitarist David Bromberg[4]; and has shared the stage with Paul Shaffer, Queen Latifah, Christie Brinkley and food personality Giada De Laurentiis.[10]

Betwixt

In the spring of 2020, locked down during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic, Loren wrote some 25 songs in a 6-to-7 week period. Returning to the recording studio in July of that year with co-producers and musicians Zach Jones and Oscar Albis Rodriguez, the trio recorded 22 songs that would form the basis for his full-length debut Betwixt, and the companion album Between, due in 2022.[11][12][13] Both albums wrapped production and were fully mixed by the end of 2020.[13]

Ahead of the 11-track collection Betwixt, Loren released the rockabilly-flavored single “No Room For Yesterday” and premiered a cinematic video for the song “Marlena” on American Songwriter,[14] shot in the California desert near Joshua Tree during a weeklong heatwave.

While his earlier material put him on the map, Loren’s heightened, and at times devastating, lyricism set against an upbeat groove-based sonic backdrop sets the LP Betwixt a career milestone,[15] much of it evoking early-Sun Studios Elvis records.[16] The record was released in the fall of 2021 with NYC-based independent music label, Five and Dime Records.[17]
