Abdennour Abbas is an Algerian-American scientist and entrepreneur whose cross-disciplinary research and entrepreneurial activities span nanotechnology, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, and artificial intelligence.[1] He is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota and the founder of several technology companies and a nonprofit organization.[1]

Early life and education

Abbas was born in Kabylia, Algeria, and is of Amazigh heritage.[2] He earned a DES in biochemistry from the University of Tizi-Ouzou before moving to France. At the University of Lille, he completed a bachelor's degree in biotechnology and a master's degree in physical chemistry. He received his PhD from the same institution, specializing in materials science and engineering with research focused on plasma-based biological microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS).[1]

Academic career

Following his doctoral studies, Abbas held postdoctoral and research positions at the University of California, Riverside and Washington University in St. Louis. In 2013, he joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota as an associate professor.[1]

In 2013, he discovered a new type of rapid and spontaneous molecular self-organization, by revealing the proton switch mechanism and a vesicle-mediated growth of tubular branches and centimeter-long microtubes from a single molecule, within a few seconds.[3] The work was highlighted for its potential applications in drug delivery and biosensing.[4][5]

In the area of new material design and development, his laboratory introduced a nanocomposite synthesis method called Crescoating — growing iron, copper and selenium nanoparticles directly on polyurethane support materials and other fabrics. The technology was later used for a variety of applications including the development of a nanosponge capable of removing mercury from water within seconds,[6][7] sorbents for the removal of arsenic and phosphorus from water,[8] the development of functional textiles including antimicrobial and antiviral textiles,[9][10][11][12] and UV-protective apparel.

His work on microbial diagnostics led to the development of a rapid, PCR-free DNA detection method using nanoaggregation-enhanced chemiluminescence.[13] This work also led to the development and commercialization of several LAMP assays.[14][15]

Entrepreneurship and non-profit work

In 2018, Abbas founded Claros Technologies Inc. to commercialize new functional materials and chemistries developed in his laboratory, specifically the destruction of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).[16] The company's PFAS destruction research, including work on UV catalysis and acoustic cavitation-based defluorination, was published in the Journal of Environmental Engineering.[17] By late 2025, the company had secured over $40 million in funding to scale its filtration and destruction technologies.[18][19][20]

In 2020, Abbas founded Frontline Biotechnologies, an AI-driven diagnostic company supported by several SBIR Phase I and Phase II awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop rapid diagnostic technologies for food and water safety.[21] The company was later renamed PureBioX.[22] Under PureBioX, Abbas developed and commercialized a rapid colorimetric LAMP assay for detecting oak wilt disease in tree samples, which has been deployed in Iowa and Texas.[23][24]

In 2023, he established the North African Academy for AI and Robotics, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing technical education in artificial intelligence and robotics training for children in Africa.[25][26][2]

Research in the foundations of physics and chemistry

In 2026, Abbas published research independently of his university role introducing the Spectral Framework addressing the foundations of physics and chemistry. This work introduces three concepts, described in three companion preprints.

The first derives the Planck/Boltzmann ratio from spectral relations and proposes that physical constants are translation invariants that appear only when spectral data are parametrized by representational quantities such as temperature and energy.[27]

The second introduces a mode-independent analysis of atomic NIST spectral data and proposes that atomic spectra form a unified global spectral structure rather than independent fingerprints.[28]

The third uses the spectral framework to derive the full organization of the periodic table using only the atomic K-edge and first ionization frequencies, revealing the periodic organization of atoms for both chemical and physical properties.[29]

He founded Spectral Dynamics Inc. to explore applications of this framework in materials design.[30]

Awards and recognition

In 2013, Abbas was named one of MIT Technology Review's Top 10 Innovators Under 35 in the European Edition.[31] During the same year, he delivered invited talks at TEDx events in Paris and Algiers.[32][33]
