Aly Madhavji (born November 18, 1990) is a Canadian technology entrepreneur, blockchain investor, author, and speaker based in Singapore.[1] He is the co-founder and managing partner of the Blockchain Founders Fund, a venture capital fund focusing on early-stage blockchain startups. Madhavji is a limited partner at Loyal VC and Draper Goren Holm and has previously served as the co-founder and CEO a digital currency exchange.[2][3]

Madhavji is a consultant to INSEAD and the United Nations (UN), providing solutions to alleviate poverty, support business ecosystems, and increase financial inclusion to achieve the UN's sustainable development goals.[4]

Madhavji is also an author, contributing to the "Your Guide to" series, co-authoring three books. He is a speaker at global conferences, sharing insights on blockchain technology. Madhavji has been honored in the London Daily News' 40 Under 40 list[5] and as a "Blockchain 100" Global Leader by Lattice80.

Early life and education

Madhavji was born and raised in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. In 2012, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce with Distinction from the University of Toronto. During his undergraduate years, Madhavji actively participated in student governance, serving on the Board of Directors of the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Student Union and later becoming the President of the University of Toronto Mississauga Residence Council.

Continuing his education, Madhavji pursued a Master of Business Administration at INSEAD in Singapore and France, graduating in 2016. Additionally, he holds a Master of Global Affairs as a Schwarzman Scholar from Tsinghua University, completing his studies in 2018.

Madhavji also holds several professional certifications, including Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®), Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA), and Certified Management Accountant (CMA).[6]

Madhavji was an officer cadet in the Canadian Forces. He received a $100,000 military scholarship for a private and commercial pilot license. He has also worked as a civilian instructor with the Canadian Armed Forces within the Royal Regiment of Canada Army Cadet Corps in Toronto, Canada.

Career

After graduating from the University of Toronto in 2012, Madhavji started his career as a senior associate in the assurance group at PwC, where he served senior clients across various sectors.[7][8]

In 2016, Madhavji transitioned to a Western European Corporate Strategy at PayPal in Paris. In his role, he conducted competitor and disruptor analysis for 11 countries, formulated recommendations for targeting the fastest-growing sub-sectors, and established an internal market landscape Confluence portal to foster collaboration.[9]

Simultaneously, Madhavji was a CPA Module Facilitator and Marker at CPA Canada. He adeptly managed candidate cohorts, evaluated assignments, and guided CPA candidates.[10]

In January 2017, Aly Madhavji co-founded GlobalDCX, a digital currency exchange based in Singapore. The platform facilitated trading in various digital currencies alongside fiat pairs, offering scalable technology, robust security, and innovative liquidity solutions. It prioritized efficient onboarding, industry-leading KYC, and anti-money laundering practices to enhance the customer experience.

In January 2018, Aly Madhavji co-founded the Blockchain Founders Fund with his brother Mansoor Madhavji.[11] Based in Singapore, the fund is an early-stage venture capital fund that invests in top-tier global blockchain startups. With a focus on blockchain, crypto, DeFi, NFT, Web 3, and metaverse startups, the Blockchain Founders Fund has made 138 investments across two funds.[12] Notable portfolio companies include Berachain, Splinterlands, Altered State Machine, and Magna. Notable investors to BFF I and BFF II funds include Appworks, Sebastien Borget (COO of The Sandbox), NEO Global Capital (NGC), and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal.[13] The fund holds a Capital Markets Services License in Singapore from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).[14]

Madhavji has also served on various blockchain advisory boards, including Polymath, ZED Network, Yumi, and the University of Toronto’s Governing Council, which oversees a $2.5 billion budget. He has held board-member positions at CryptoStar and Soluna Holdings.

Currently, Madhavji consults organizations on emerging technologies, including INSEAD and the United Nations (UN), focusing on solutions to alleviate poverty, support business ecosystems, increase financial inclusion, and advance society towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

He is a Limited Partner at Loyal VC and Draper Goren Holm and mentors at Orbit Startups, SOSV's elite accelerator program with over $1.1 billion in assets under management, and the Mobile Only Accelerator (MOX), which helps the best mobile startups acquire users in Southeast Asia, India, Eastern Europe, and South America via its smartphone platform with 167 million users. He is also a mentor at Antler, a global startup generator and early-stage VC.

Additionally, Madhavji holds advisory roles at various blockchain organizations, such as Monarch Blockchain Corporation, Splinterlands, Melodie Music, Jauntin, AllRites, Beatdapp, and Arf.

He contributes as a guest writer to Cointelegraph and is a monthly columnist for the Experts Corner of Corporate Investment Times Magazine. He frequently writes on leading web3 projects to further support the growth of the web3 industry.[15][16]

Madhavji is an internationally acclaimed author known for his "Your Guide to" series, which includes three books: "Your Guide to Succeed in University," "Your Guide to Get Into Medical School," and "Your Guide to Succeed After Graduation."[17]

In 2021, Madhavji co-authored case studies on Sorare and Binance at INSEAD. He travels to universities worldwide, sharing advice and tips with college students on navigating higher education, post-graduation success, and applying to medical school.

Madhavji is also a highly sought-after industry thought leader, frequently speaking about blockchain at conferences globally. His speaking engagements include prominent events such as Money 20/20, Seamless, Consensus by CoinDesk, the World Blockchain Summit, the Blockchain Economic Forum, Satoshi United, BlockShow by CoinTelegraph, the Blockchain Pioneers Summit, the Blockchain Technology Conference, ConnectTech Asia, the Global Innovation Forum, the World Blockchain Forum, and the World Blockchain Conference.
