Arjan Hura is an American ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon. He is a partner at the Maloney–Shamie–Hura Vision Institute in Los Angeles, California. Hura is known for his work in modern vision correction procedures including LASIK, SMILE, PRK, implantable collamer lens (EVO ICL) implantation, refractive lens exchange (RLE), and cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lenses.[1][2] Hura is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences.[3]

Early life and education

Hura earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in refractive, cataract, and anterior segment surgery at the Cleveland Eye Clinic and Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center under William F. Wiley, MD, and Shamik Bafna, MD.[2]

Career

Hura is a partner at the Maloney–Shamie–Hura Vision Institute, a concierge refractive and cataract surgery practice in Los Angeles, California.[4] He has performed thousands of refractive and cataract surgeries, specializing in EVO ICL implantation, refractive lens exchange, LASIK, SMILE, and advanced cataract procedures.[1]

In 2023, Hura was featured in Rising Eye Star, Season Three, a program recognizing promising young ophthalmologists worldwide.[5] In May 2024, Hura was named a “Rising Star” in the Power List by The Ophthalmologist, an influential international publication recognizing emerging leaders in ophthalmology.[6] In 2024, journalist Kate Kirby profiled Hura in Medium, describing his role in advancing cataract and refractive surgery techniques in Los Angeles.[7] Ophthalmology Times highlighted Hura among emerging refractive surgeons in discussions of next-generation lens-based technologies.[8] Healio has also featured his perspectives on refractive cataract surgery and presbyopia-correcting technologies.[9]

Hura has spoken at ophthalmology conferences including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS).[10]

He currently serves on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Patient Education Committee and Resident Self-Assessment Committee, and has previously served on the AAO Young Ophthalmologist Advocacy Subcommittee and the ASCRS Government Relations Committee.[10] Hura is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences.[11]

He has served as co-director of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) Laser Surgery Skills Transfer Course since 2022 and has served as director since 2025. He has also chaired national meetings including The Outliers meeting and Controversies in Modern Eye Care since 2023.

Research and publications

Hura has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed articles on refractive and cataract surgery, including work on toric IOL alignment technologies, dry eye/meibomian gland imaging after vectored thermal pulsation, a lenticular extraction related corneal distortion case, and surgeon ergonomics using three-dimensional screen display systems.
