Brady John Hillis (born c. 1989) is a Canadian former Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer who pleaded guilty in United States federal court to abusive sexual contact with minors. He was prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and subsequently sentenced to imprisonment in the United States.[1][2]
Background and career
Hillis was employed by the Ontario Provincial Police and was assigned to the Kenora detachment. He resigned from the force following the allegations that led to his prosecution in the United States.[3]
Criminal charges, extradition and prosecution
According to U.S. Department of Justice press releases and subsequent news reports, Hillis was captured on security surveillance video at the Fortune Bay Resort and Casino (on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation in Minnesota) engaging in sexual contact with minors on June 22, 2018. The Department of Justice press release and court filings state the victims were under 12 years of age. [1] United States authorities sought Hillis's extradition from Canada to face federal charges in the United States. Canadian courts reviewed the extradition order, and an appeal challenging extradition was dismissed by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2021.[4][5] Hillis pleaded guilty on January 18, 2022, to two counts of abusive sexual contact with a child under 12 in U.S. federal court. [1]
Sentencing
On July 19, 2022, Hillis was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 120 months (10 years) in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for the abusive sexual contact convictions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted the convictions arose from conduct captured on casino surveillance video at Fortune Bay. [2]
