She then pursued further studies, attaining a Master of Science in Statistics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) – Institute of Mathematics and Statistics in 1992, where her dissertation focused on the application of dynamic linear models. Silva later earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from the Maths Department University of Southampton UK, in 1997, with a thesis on modeling compositional time series from repeated surveys.
Career[4]
From 1987 to 2019, Silva worked at the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE), where she held various positions, including Survey Methodologist and, later, Director of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) from 2011 to 2014. From 2007 to 2010, she worked as a principal methodologist at the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) and as a lecturer at the University of Southampton in 2006[4] . After her retirement in 2019, she continued to contribute to education as a Voluntary Faculty member at ENCE until 2024[2][4]. In her current role at SCIENCE[1], Silva focuses on designing and implementing surveys, analyzing data, developing statistical models, and statistical education.
Contribution to Statistical Education and Research[4]
Silva has contributed to the education sector, having been involved in the supervision of several MSc and PhD students throughout her career. She is also known for her consultancy work on survey methods and statistical modeling for social issues, particularly in areas like unemployment, poverty measurement, human trafficking and the effects of environmental disasters.
