Elicit is an American artificial intelligence company located in Oakland, California. Founded in 2023 by Andreas Stuhlmüller and Jungwon Byun, the company aims to provide systematic scholarly literature reviews and support for researchers and academics working in the sciences via the use of an AI research assistant.

History

Following an initial incubation period through the non-profit Ought[1], Elicit became an independent company in 2023 upon raising $9 million in seed funding[2]. Built in order to “to understand what is known,” as defined by co-founder Byun during a 2024 podcast interview[3], the company helps researchers with the task of “literature summarization,” using language models to sort through and summarize scientific literature. A 2025 study found that tools like Elicit and Chat GPT have the potential to speed up systemic reviews of scientific papers by potentially replacing one of the two human reviewers usually needed. An additional study found that Elicit reduced decision-making time by 20.6 percent.[4]

Located in Oakland, California, the company has over twenty full-time staff members as of 2026.[5]

Products and services

Elicit provides research support to scientists through an AI research assistant, expediting the research process. Future plans for the company include the development and incorporation of “reasoning and decision-making” into the language models, operating beyond purely “text-based workflows.”[6] Ultimately, Elicit helps academics reduce the time spent on literature review, allowing more opportunities for research and growth. In an independent evaluation published by the Social Science Computer Review in 2025, researchers found that Elicit’s automated data extraction resulted in an 81.4 percent overall accuracy rate, compared to 86.7 percent for human reviewers[7].
