Fez Meghani (born 1976) is a Pakistani-American singer, songwriter, composer, lyricist, and music producer known for his contributions to Sufi-inspired devotional and spiritual music. He is the founder and frontman of the Sufi pop-rock band The Sufistics, recognized for blending traditional South Asian and Middle Eastern spiritual themes with contemporary musical styles.
Early Life and Education
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Meghani was raised in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At the age of 17, he moved to the United States, where he pursued higher education. He earned a degree in Business from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Musical Career
Meghani began composing music at the age of 15. His early works were influenced by feelings of separation and longing, leading to the creation of over 50 songs in English and Urdu.
In 1995, he started working on his first album, “Aag,” which was released in 1997. Subsequently, he collaborated with keyboardist Shams Soomar to form the band “i.t.n.a” (In The Name of Allah), focusing on performances at Jamati events. Their notable album, “City of Light,” was released in 2002 to commemorate the Aga Khan IV's visit to Houston.
In 2005, Meghani began producing “A Golden Sunrise,” an album celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the Aga Khan IV’s Imamat. Songs like “Tu Hi Tu Hai” and “Allahumma Salli Alaa Muhammad-in Wa Aal-e Muhammad” from this album gained popularity among North American youth during the festivities.
Meghani has released multiple albums and has written or produced over 200 songs. His music often incorporates elements from Ginans, Qasidas, and other South Asian and Central Asian devotional forms.
The Sufistics
Fez Meghani founded The Sufistics, a Sufi pop-rock ensemble known for its energetic live performances and its combination of musical storytelling, spiritual themes, and light-hearted stage banter. The group, comprised of Meghani and fellow collaborators, Aftab Ali and Pervaiz Mirza, has performed at over 500 concerts across North America, Europe, Central Asia, South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Highlights of The Sufistics’ international appearances include:
- Two-time performers at the Islamic Music Festival in Malaysia, one of these being in the presence of the Queen, Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
- Featured performers at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles in 2015.
