He is the recipient of the Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award from the Academy of Management and the Competition Policy Award from Autoridade da Concorrência (AdC).
Early Life and Education
Ederer was born and raised in Austria. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics and Management from the University of Oxford's Worcester College in 2002. Education
Ederer completed his B.A. in Economics and Management and M.Phil. in Economics at the University of Oxford in 2002 and 2004, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009.[2]
Career
From 2009 to 2013, Ederer was an assistant professor at the University of California. Subsequently, he was an assistant professor until 2019 and an associate professor from 2019 to 2023 at Yale University. Since then, he has been the Allen and Kelli Questrom Professor in Markets, Public Policy, and Law at Boston University.[2] He is a research member at the European Corporate Governance Institute.[3]
Research
Ederer's research has focused on industrial organization,[4] innovation economics,[5] and organizational economics,[6] He has studied how managerial incentives and ownership structures influence firms' innovation.[7] He has also examined topics in experimental economics,[8] executive incentives,[7] opaque incentive schemes,[9] trust and communication in economic interactions,[10] and the anonymous online forum EJMR used by economists.[11]
Along with Colleen Cunningham and Song Ma, Ederer has co-authored the article "Killer Acquisitions", in which he showed that some pharmaceutical acquisitions reduce competition by discontinuing overlapping drug development in acquired projects.[12][13] Firms prefer acquiring competing products over developing them internally due to cannibalization incentives.[14] For this paper, he has received the Jerry S. Cohen Memorial Fund Writing Award,[15] the Robert F. Lanzillotti Prize,[16] the Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award,[17] and the Competition Policy Award.[18] The paper was cited in the Biden administration's 2021 competition Executive Order[19] and in a U.S. congressional report on digital market competition.[20]
Ederer has also received an award for his research on common ownership.[15] This work examined how common ownership affects managerial incentives[21] and how it shapes acquisition activity and merger incentives. His research found that common ownership can raise corporate profits while reducing consumer welfare through weaker competition and higher deadweight loss.[22]
