Frisk Radio is an SS-DAB radio station based in Blyth, Northumberland, England. It is owned and operated by Frisk Radio Ltd. The station launched on SS-DAB in December 2021 and broadcasts to Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Darlington, Middlesbrough and Redcar.[1]
Format
Frisk Radio plays a range of dance and upbeat pop music ranging from the early 90s to the present day.
At weekends, there are a number of syndicated specialist shows, including those produced by DJs Judge Jules and Roger Sanchez.
History
Internet Station
Frisk Radio initially started as an internet-only station, under the strapline "Non-Stop Dance Hits". The station broadcast dance music without presenters or advertising.
Studios
The station acquired offices and studios at Landreth House, in Blyth, Northumberland
SS-DAB Launch
The station launched on the Tynemouth & South Shields SS-DAB multiplex at 7am on Friday 10th December 2021 under the strapline "The Rhythm of the North East"
The first voice was presenter Andy G. The first show was "Andy & Steph's Rude Awakening" and the first track played was "Tell Me Something Good" by Ewan McVicar.
The station later expanded to Middlesbrough & Redcar, and to Darlington when the SS-DAB multiplexes for those areas launched in 2023.[2]
Smart Media Acquisition & 2024 Rebrand
In February 2024, out of home operator Smart Outdoor Media acquired a stake in Frisk Radio Ltd.[3]
The logo was revised with a new font and uppercase lettering.
Technology
Frisk Radio own and operate their own cloud-based software platform (Vudio), which manages all areas of station management, including playout, voice-tracking, streaming, show-prep, content, music management, CMS, sales management, ad-scheduling and finances.[4]
Although the station does have a studio at it's offices in Blyth, Northumberland, most presenters deliver their show content in near-real-time from home studios.
