Gasoline Grill is a Danish hamburger restaurant group founded in 2016 by Klaus Wittrup. The business began at a former filling station in central Copenhagen and later expanded to multiple locations in the city and internationally through pop-ups.[1]
History
Gasoline Grill opened in April 2016 at Landgreven 10 in Copenhagen. Wittrup had previously worked in the Danish food industry, including roles at Aarstiderne and with chef Claus Meyer, before launching the restaurant. According to the Danish business newspaper Børsen, the concept was developed as a small-scale operation focused on a limited menu and daily production, with the original location operating until sold out each day.[2]
In 2017, international attention followed after Bloomberg Pursuits included Gasoline Grill in a list of notable burger restaurants worldwide, which led to increased demand and visibility.[3] Børsen later reported that the business expanded to additional locations across Copenhagen and achieved Gazelle company status, reflecting rapid growth in activity.[4]
Operations
Gasoline Grill operates with a limited menu centred on burgers prepared with organic ingredients. Beef patties are formed and cooked on-site each day, and the buns used by the group were developed specifically for the business. In 2022, Gasoline Grill received Denmark’s Gold Organic Cuisine Label (Det Økologiske Spisemærke).[5]
International presence
In 2024, Gasoline Grill operated a temporary pop-up residency in London at The Standard hotel in King’s Cross. Writing in The Times, journalist Hannah Evans described the London opening as drawing significant attention and outlined the group’s expansion from Copenhagen to the United Kingdom.[6]
