Gill Walton is the current Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives. Gill is a passionate midwife and experienced NHS senior manager. Gill was a nurse at University College Hospital, before undertaking her midwifery training at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. Gill joined the Royal College of Midwives in 2017 as CEO, after having held Director of Midwifery posts at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Barking, Havering and Redbridge (2004-2007), John Radcliffe in Oxford (2007-2011) and Portsmouth Hospitals (2011-2017).
Gill was awarded a CBE for services to midwifery in 2022 in the Queen's Jubilee Honours. Upon receiving the award she said: "Being a midwife is something I feel in my core, so to receive this award for services to midwifery is both humbling and gratifying".[1]
The University of Greenwich presented Gill Walton with a honorary doctorate in 2022[2]. Gill also received a honorary doctorate from Bournemouth University in the same year. [3] Gill has been vocal about women and families receiving substandard care in the UK and has been calling for safe and personalised maternity care.[4]
