Harness Inc. is a San Francisco-based software company with a research and development presence in Bengaluru that develops tools for application development, continuous integration, and continuous delivery (CI/CD) for engineering and DevOps teams.[2] It also does security testing orchestration and supply chain security, and related tools for cloud cost management.[3] Its platform is designed to support software release and deployment workflows in cloud and container-based environments.[4]

History

Harness was launched in 2017 by Jyoti Bansal and Rishi Singh.[2] The company was spun out of BIG Labs, a startup studio founded by Bansal, which also participated in its early funding and contributed $5 million to its Series A round.[5] Harness was publicly unveiled in October 2017 as a platform that applied machine learning to automate aspects of continuous delivery and support automated verification and rollback processes.[6][7]

The company launched its service delivery platform (known at the time as a continuous app delivery platform) in 2018.[2] In 2019, Harness announced partnerships with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform and made its offering available through their respective marketplaces.[2] That year it also joined the Continuous Delivery Foundation, a Linux Foundation project formed in March 2019.[8]

In April 2019, Harness announced a $60 million funding round led by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Google Ventures (GV), and ServiceNow Ventures, with participation from Menlo Ventures and Unusual Ventures.[9]

In 2021, Harness announced an $85 million funding round led by Alkeon Capital, with participation from several new and existing investors.[10] Around the same period, the company disclosed a previously unannounced $30 million Series B-1 round led by Menlo Ventures, IVP, and Unusual Ventures.[11] Harness stated that it would use these funds to expand its product roadmap and global presence.[12]

In April 2022, Harness announced $230 million in financing at a reported $3.7 billion valuation, including both equity and debt.[13]

In January 2024, Harness announced the acquisition of Armory Inc.[14] In May 2024, the company disclosed a $150 million round of debt financing led by Silicon Valley Bank (a division of First Citizens Bank) with participation from Hercules Capital.[14] In June 2024, Harness announced the acquisition of Split Software, a feature management and experimentation company.[15]

In December 2025, the company raised $240 million in a Series E funding round at a post-money valuation of $5.5 billion.[16] The round comprised a $200 million primary investment led by Goldman Sachs and a planned $40 million tender offer involving IVP, Menlo Ventures, and Unusual Ventures, intended to provide liquidity to long-term employees.[16] The valuation represented an increase from $3.7 billion in a $230 million financing announced in April 2022, bringing the company’s total equity funding to $570 million.[16]

Harness has expanded through acquisitions, including Drone.io (2020) and ChaosNative (2022), the developer of the open-source chaos engineering project LitmusChaos.[17] The company integrated chaos engineering and reliability-related capabilities into its broader software delivery platform.[18][19]

In 2025, Bansal’s application security company Traceable merged with Harness.[20] The combined company would operate as a unified platform spanning software delivery and security tooling.[21]

Business Model

Harness offers both free and paid plans. The company’s published pricing has included a free tier with limits on users, pipelines, and service instances, and a paid tier with usage-based pricing tied to applications and infrastructure units.[4]

Products and technology

Harness’s core offerings focus on CI/CD, release orchestration, and related workflows.[11] The platform supports pipeline creation and deployment across containerized and non-containerized applications and integrates with third-party observability and infrastructure tools.[4] The company has also introduced modules for cloud cost management, internal developer portals, application testing, and application security features.[13]

On June 21, 2023, Harness Inc. announced an AI-based assistant called AIDA (AI Development Assistant) for use across the software development life cycle.[22] The product was rebranded as Harness AI in August 2025.[20] The company describes the system as combining a knowledge graph, workflow orchestration, and specialized agents for tasks in DevOps, site reliability engineering, security, and testing.[20] In September 2025, Harness announced additional agentic workflows and automation features across release orchestration, internal developer portals, and FinOps, along with autonomous code maintenance capabilities.[20]

Harness has reported enterprise adoption across sectors, including financial services, retail, and technology.[12] The company and some customers have reported reductions in deployment times and deployment-related errors following adoption of the platform. These performance figures have been presented in company statements and case studies.[23]
