Hugh D. Fuller is a champion powerboat racer hailing from Alabama, United States.[1] He races powerboats weighing around 12,000 pounds at speeds exceeding 180 miles per hour.[2]

Fuller started his career racing cars in the 1990s and then switched to powerboat racing in the 2000s. With an extensive career of almost three decades racing high-powered vehicles, he has won several championships. As a powerboat racer, he has been credited with several titles, including both world and national championships. He is a member of the American Power Boat Association (APBA) Hall of Champions.[3]

Career

Before switching to powerboats in the 2000s, Fuller had a career in auto racing that began in the early 1990s.[4] Fuller competed in several races, including the Indy Grand Prix, Grand Prix of Atlanta,12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona, and 25 races in the International Motor Sports Association - Grand Touring Prototype (IMSA-GTP) circuit. During his career as a sports car racer, Fuller learned to achieve the perfect balance between speed and control.[5]

In the 2000s Fuller shifted his career to powerboat racing. Within a short span of time, Fuller made his mark as a winning powerboat driver. He gained quick fame within three years of launching his career by winning four world championships and four national championships, including consecutive Super Cat National and World Championships from 2001 to 2003. Also in 2003, Fuller was inducted into the APBA Hall of Champions.

In 2011, Fuller finished in first place in the three-day Super Boat National Championship, notching an average speed of 138 mph on a challenging 79.2-mile course.[6]

Fuller credits much of his success to his phenomenal professional partnerships with renowned throttlemen like John Tomlinson, Jerry Gilbreath, and Rich Wyatt.[7] In the early 2000s, Fuller teamed up with Tomlinson and successfully won a Super Cat professional offshore powerboat race. Currently, the duo share six titles, including three national championships and three world championships. Fuller has also been successful in winning the Bright House Super Boat Offshore Championship and the 2019 Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) World Championship with Wyatt as throttleman.[8]
