Hugh Edmeades[1] is a British auctioneer who served as Indian Premier League auctioneer from 2018 to 2023.

Career

Early career

Edmeades began his professional auctioneer career in the UK and became known for his distinctive voice rapid calling style.[2]

Hugh Edmeades spent over 35 years working at auction house Christie's before becoming freelance auctioneer.[3]

IPL auctioneer

Edmeades was appointed as the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League in 2018, replacing the Richard Madley.[3][4][5] He conducted first IPL auction in 2019.

According to a profile by CNBC-TV18 Edmeades brought a " calm and composed" style to the high pressure IPL auctions.[6]

2022 IPL on-stage collapse

During the 2022 IPL mega auction, Edmeades collapsed on stage[7] due to postural hypotension.[8][9][10]

Medical teams attended to him immediately and was taken to hospital for evaluation.[11]

After the incident Charu Sharma replaces Hugh Edmeades,[12] for today.[13][14]

During the 2022 Indian Premier League auction, Edmeades collapsed due to low blood pressure[15][16] while conducting the bidding. He later returned to complete the final hour of the auction and received standing ovation.[17][18]

Return and later work

Edmeades return as auctioneer for the 2023 IPL season, marking his continued association with the league despite the previous year's incident.[19][20]

End of IPL tenure

Ahead of 2024 Indian Premier League auction, BCCI informed Edmeades that his services would not be required, ending his five-season run as the league's auctioneer.[21] Hugh Edmeades is replaced by Mallika Sagar.[22]

Indian Premier League auctions

Hugh Edmeades has served as the primary auctioneer for the Indian Premier League players auction since 2018.[3] At the 2019 IPL auction he commented on the challenges of the event, stating that he would try "try my best to get the names right", reflecting the pressure and pacing involved in conducting large-scale players bidding sessions.[23]

2022 IPL incidents

Edmeades has spoken about memorable moments in the IPL auctions, including selling players such as Wanindu Hasaranga and reflecting on the dynamics and pacing of the bidding process.[24]
