iFIT Inc. is a global health and fitness technology company headquartered in Logan, Utah, United States. Formerly known as ICON Health & Fitness, iFIT develops connected fitness equipment and interactive digital workout content. As of 2024, the company reports serving over 6.4 million members worldwide through its subscription-based platform.[2]
History
iFIT Inc. originated in 1977 as Weslo, Inc., a company founded in Utah by Scott Watterson and Gary Stevenson. Initially importing household goods, Weslo later shifted its focus to fitness equipment. In the 1980s, the company began producing home exercise machines under the ProForm brand, including treadmills and other cardiovascular equipment.[3]
In 1988, Weslo and its ProForm brand were acquired by Weider Health and Fitness. Several years later, in 1994, a management group including Watterson reacquired these assets from Weider and formed ICON Health & Fitness, Inc. The company subsequently expanded through acquisitions, including:
- HealthRider (1996), known for rider-style machines
- NordicTrack (1998), purchased out of bankruptcy
- FreeMotion Fitness (2001), a commercial gym equipment brand
During this period, ICON grew to become a massive manufacturer of home fitness equipment globally, marketing products under multiple brand names including NordicTrack, ProForm, Weslo, and Gold's Gym[4].
In the early 2000s, ICON launched the first iteration of the iFIT platform—an interactive workout technology that enabled machines to adjust automatically based on digital training programs. This marked the beginning of the company’s investment in connected fitness.
In 2016, private equity firm Pamplona Capital Management acquired a significant stake in the company. This investment supported further development in streaming content, mobile applications, and connected hardware.[5]
In 2021, the company rebranded as iFIT Health & Fitness Inc. to reflect its evolving focus on interactive digital fitness experiences. The rebrand corresponded with an expansion of its subscription-based workout platform and machine-learning-powered personalization features.[6]
That same year, iFIT filed for an initial public offering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, although the offering was later postponed.[7]
As of 2024, iFIT remains a privately held company with a global membership of 6 million users. Its platform is accessible on equipment manufactured by its brands, as well as on mobile apps and smart TVs in over 120 countries.
Platform and Content
The iFIT platform offers on-demand and live-streamed fitness content delivered through a subscription-based app. It features a library of over 10,000 workouts led by more than 180 trainers across disciplines including running, strength training, cycling, yoga, rowing, Pilates, mindfulness, and recovery.
Workouts are available with or without compatible equipment, and iFIT content can be accessed through a variety of devices including treadmills, exercise bikes, ellipticals, smartphones, tablets, and televisions. The iFIT TV app is available on Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Android TV, and Roku.[8]
iFIT's equipment-compatible workouts can automatically adjust incline, speed, resistance, or decline to match terrain or trainer cues. Outdoor workouts are filmed on location across the seven continents, using GPS and Google Maps™ integrations to simulate real-world elevation and environment. Users can also create custom treadmill workouts by manually setting time, incline, and speed intervals.
Additional platform features include:
- Progressive series, which guide users toward specific goals through structured multi-week programs
- Global workouts, including scenic and trainer-led sessions filmed in international locations
- Community challenges, which encourage participation in multi-user events
- Leaderboards for tracking progress and comparing performance with other users
- iFIT Mind, a wellness series that includes sessions focused on sleep, stress reduction, and mindfulness, led by mental health professionals and educators
- Cooking and nutrition content, offered through the iFIT app as part of its holistic wellness approach
Workouts are available on-demand and may be filtered by duration, intensity, trainer, equipment type, and music style. Many classes include real-time machine adjustments, while others can be completed using only a mat or bodyweight.
