Ilija Subotić is a Montenegrin producer and cultural manager. Since 2023, he has been serving as the director of the Montenegrin National Theatre (CNP) in Podgorica. Previously, he was the director of the Royal Theatre "Zetski dom" in Cetinje and a long-time senior advisor for theatre and film activities at the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro. Throughout his career, he has focused on developing and enhancing regional and international cultural cooperation.
Education
He graduated in Production in the field of theatre, film, radio, and television from the Faculty of Drama Arts in Cetinje. He also holds a master's degree in international cultural cooperation and cultural diplomacy from the same faculty at the University of Montenegro.
Career
Subotić began his professional career at the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, where he worked for ten years as an senior advisor for theatre, film, audiovisual activities, and cinematography.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as the director of the Royal Theatre "Zetski dom" in Cetinje, the oldest Montenegrin state theatre with the status of a national theatre.
Since 2023, he has been the director of the Montenegrin National Theatre in Podgorica. During his leadership, the theatre marked its 70th anniversary.
Between 2014 and 2018, he taught Production at the Faculty of Visual Arts in Podgorica, contributing to the education of young artists and producers.
Regional and International Cooperation
Subotić is actively involved in promoting European cultural values and is the initiator of projects aimed at affirming Montenegrin culture in regional and European contexts.
He has represented Montenegro in key European programs, funds, and associations in the field of culture.
During his career, he has participated in various programs, forums, symposiums, and conferences related to culture in over 30 countries across Europe, Canada, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.
Under his directorship, both the Royal Theatre "Zetski dom" and the Montenegrin National Theatre secured membership in the European Theatre Convention (ETC) — the largest and most influential network of leading public theatres in Europe.
