Inner Cosmos was founded in 2016 in San Francisco by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in neuroengineering, neurosurgery, and medical device development.[1]

In 2022, Bloomberg News reported that Inner Cosmos had implanted its first patient with a device designed to treat depression by delivering electrical stimulation to the brain via an electrode array placed within the skull.[2]

Technology

According to Bloomberg, the Inner Cosmos device is implanted under the scalp and within the skull bone, without penetrating brain tissue. The system delivers targeted stimulation to brain regions associated with mood regulation.[2]

The company's approach has been compared to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive treatment for depression, but offers potential advantages in providing continuous therapy via an implanted system.[2]

Clinical research

Bloomberg reported that Inner Cosmos initiated a first-in-human clinical trial to assess the safety and feasibility of its implant for treating treatment-resistant depression. The study was conducted under the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and involved a small number of patients.[2]
