Joaquim Roca is a Spanish biomedical scientist who serves as Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and head of the DNA Topology Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB).[1][2][3] Roca graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 1983 and earned a PhD from the same university in 1988.[4][5] He received postdoctoral training (1988–1991) and worked as a research associate (1992–1996) in the laboratory of James C. Wang at Harvard University. He joined the IBMB in 1997.[4][5][1]
His research centered on uncovering the DNA transport mechanism of Topoisomerases and how these enzymes modulate the helical tension and entanglement of DNA within biological systems. He also developed DNA electrophoresis and high-throughput sequencing approaches to decipher the DNA topology at local and genome-wide scales. [5][6][7]
