Kirsten Burke (23 February 1970) is an English artist known for bold and dynamic use of calligraphy and lettering. Following a post graduate qualification in formal calligraphy, she developed a new style of modern calligraphy that references traditional techniques but injects spontaneity and freedom. Rather than use a broad edge nib to create the characteristic thick and thin strokes of calligraphy, she uses a pointed nib and applies and releases pressure, creating a flowing, energetic style.
Biography
Kirsten Burke was born in Greenwich, England in 1970 to a Dutch mother and Irish father. She studied graphic design at the University of the West of England, where she specialised in the use of hand lettering within type and graphics.
She developed an interest in subverting traditional forms of calligraphy, influenced by the lettering found in urban art, bringing a modern energy and sensibility to calligraphic art.
Burke studied formal calligraphy at Roehampton University, studying under Gaynor Goffe, Ewan Clayton and Gerald Fluess. She gained a thorough grounding in traditional forms in order to blend traditional and progressive lettering in her artwork.
Career
Kirsten Burke founded The Modern Calligraphy Company with her school friend and business partner Jill Hembling in 1997. Initially the company focused on public art and installations, but as Burke's reputation grew, the company diversified to teach calligraphy at all levels, write a series of books.[1], become Master Calligraphers to a number of brands including Jo Malone London[2],Tom Ford and Creme de la Mer. Corporate clients include the BBC, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and Rolls Royce. [3][1]
Burke's work featured on the cover of Crafts magazine (published by The Crafts Council) issue 152, with an in-depth profile pp24-27[4]. Her work is also included in Vivien Lunniss's book Complete Guide to Calligraphy, referencing Kirsten's approach to Layout and Design, featuring her artwork 'Repartee'.[5]
