Klaus D. McDonald-Maier is a computer scientist and electronic engineer at the University of Essex. He has been associated with UltraSoC, a company developing debugging and monitoring technology for systems-on-chip.[1][2]
McDonald-Maier studied electrical engineering at the University of Ulm and CPE Lyon, and completed a doctorate in computer science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He later joined the University of Essex, where he became a professor in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.[3]
UltraSoC was founded as a university spin-out in 2006, and McDonald-Maier was identified as its founder and technical director.[4] In 2012, the company secured further investment, and McDonald-Maier was identified as one of its founders.[5] Siemens acquired UltraSoC in 2020.[6] He has also been linked with Metrarc, a company working on hardware-security technology.[7]
His work has also included agri-food robotics at the University of Essex, including the Sustainable smArt Robotic Agriculture initiative, which received the 2026 AI & Robotics Research Award for Best Research Project (Industry Collaboration).[8]
