Lika Bugaeva (Ukrainian: Ліка Бугайова; born Anzhelika Ihorivna Bugaeva; 22 February 1991) is a Ukrainian musician, composer, and songwriter. She is the lead vocalist of the indie rock band Zetetics[1][2] and co-founder of the sound studio Epiphany Sound.[3]

Early life

Bugaeva was born on 22 February 1991 in Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad Oblast, Ukraine. She studied vocal performance in Kyiv, specializing in jazz compositions.

Career

2011–2015: Early career and The Voice

In 2011, Bugaeva became a semi-finalist on the first season of the Ukrainian version of The Voice (Holos Krainy), reaching the live shows.[4][5][6]

In 2014, she released the music video for "Fly Away", which incorporated sign language interpretation.[7]

In 2015, Bugaeva performed at the SVOЇ Festival in Lviv, Ukraine's first festival dedicated to new Ukrainian music.

2015–present: Zetetics

On 8 October 2015, Bugaeva rebranded her project as Zetetics and released the album Zetetic.[8] The album was recognized among the best Ukrainian albums of 2015 by music publications including BeeHype.[9]

In spring 2017, Bugaeva embarked on an acoustic European tour, performing in Budapest, Venice, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Zetetics performed at the Atlas Weekend festival in Kyiv in both 2017 and 2018.

The band's third studio album, 11:11, was released in September 2019.[10][11] The album was featured in Slukh.media's selection of best Ukrainian music of January 2020.[12]

In 2020, Zetetics released the single "Sil" (Salt).[13] That year, Zetetics was selected among the top 10 most popular bands of the Stage 13 project by Hromadske.[14]

In 2021, Bugaeva became a member of the National All-Ukrainian Music Union.

Post-2022: Relocation to the UK

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bugaeva relocated to Brighton, United Kingdom.[1]

In 2023, Zetetics was featured in Suspilne's coverage of Eurovision national selection participants.[15]

In May 2023, she performed with Zetetics at the Xpresia Festival in Liverpool as part of the Eurovision Culture Village, marking the band's first UK performance.[1][2] The performance at the Invisible Wind Factory featured songs from the album Cold Star performed live for the first time.[1]

The album Cold Star was released in 2021 and covered by Marie Claire Ukraine.[16]

Film and podcast work

Bugaeva composed the music for the Ukrainian-Dutch film Forever-Forever, directed by Anna Buryachkova. The film premiered on 5 September 2023 in the Orizzonti Extra section at the 80th Venice International Film Festival[17][18] and was awarded Best Film at the 2023 FilmFestival Cottbus.[19][20]

In 2020, Bugaeva composed music for Anakonda, a documentary about Ukrainian judoka Daria Bilodid, directed by Anna Buryachkova.[21][22]

In 2022, Bugaeva composed music for Centropa Stories: A Ukrainian Jewish Century, a podcast series produced by Epiphany Sound. The series features British actors including Jason Isaacs, Janet Suzman, Henry Goodman, and Allan Corduner reading stories from Centropa's archive of Ukrainian Jewish interviews.[3]

Musical style and influences

Bugaeva cites British artists as major influences, including Radiohead, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Peter Gabriel, Nick Cave, Massive Attack, Tricky, Florence and the Machine, Kings of Leon, and Hozier.[1]
