Maki Fine Arts is a contemporary art gallery located in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 2010 by Takahiro Maki, the gallery specializes in works by emerging and established contemporary artists from Japan and abroad.[1] The gallery is known for representing artists who achieve significant recognition in the art world, such as Yasuko Toyoshima, who held a major solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2023.[2]

History

Maki Fine Arts was established in 2010 by Takahiro Maki in Nihonbashi Odenmacho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.[1] Initially, the gallery aimed to introduce emerging and mid-career Japanese artists to the world. In 2015, it relocated to its current location in Kagurazaka, operating in a renovated space that was previously used as an automobile repair shop.[3] Director Maki studied art management at the Department of Arts Policy and Management at Musashino Art University, then gained experience as an art dealer in New York before returning to Japan in spring 2010 to establish the gallery.[1]

Exhibitions and Artists

The gallery primarily represents artists including Yoshio Shirakawa (born 1948), Yasuko Toyoshima (born 1967), and Fuminao Suenaga (born 1974).[2] The gallery is particularly known for exhibitions curated by the artists themselves, such as "Beyond the Future of Meld Sculpture" curated by Yoshio Shirakawa in 2018 and "Discreet Abstraction" curated by Fuminao Suenaga in 2015, both of which garnered significant attention.[1]

Major Artist Activities

From December 2023 to March 2024, gallery artist Yasuko Toyoshima held "Yasuko Toyoshima: Origination Method" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.[2] This was Toyoshima's first museum solo exhibition, providing a comprehensive overview of her 30-year career and featuring approximately 400 works. The exhibition was highly acclaimed in the art world, with essays by prominent art critics Ryo Katsumata and Takuya Nakao.[4]

International Activities

The gallery is also active in introducing international artists. In 2019, it held "The Trauma of Information," the first Asian solo exhibition by American artist Alex Dodge.[5] Dodge developed a unique production method using laser-cut stencils, inspired by traditional Japanese katazome dyeing techniques. The gallery participated annually in the NADA Art Fair in New York from 2016 to 2018, gaining international attention.[1]

Location and Operations

Maki Fine Arts is located on the basement floor of 77-5 Tenjin-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, approximately a 4-minute walk from Exit 2 of Kagurazaka Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line.[3] Operating hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00-19:00 and Sunday from 12:00-17:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Distinction from MAKI Gallery

Maki Fine Arts is a separate organization from "MAKI Gallery," which operates galleries in Omotesando and Tennoz. MAKI Gallery was originally established as "SAKURADO FINE ARTS" in 2003 and changed to its current name in 2020.[6]
