Mia Erlin is a Finnish media artist, sound designer, and lighting designer working in the fields of public art, installations, and community-based art. She has worked as an artist and designer since 1997 and currently works as a lighting designer and project manager at WSP Design Studio. Erlin has created numerous permanent and temporary works for public spaces and festivals across Finland. In addition to her artistic practice, she also works as an art coordinator, curator, and event producer.
Education
Mia Erlin graduated from the University of the Arts Helsinki / Theatre Academy with a Master of Arts degree in lighting and sound design in 2005. She completed a specialization course in architectural lighting design at Aalto University in 2008 and studied arts management in the master’s programme at the Sibelius Academy from 2009 to 2011.
Career
Erlin began her career in the performing arts as a lighting and sound designer and composer."Suo tihkua vihreä tammi". Susanna Leinonen Company. She has worked on productions of various scales in theatre, dance, music, and visual arts both in Finland and internationally. Her work has been presented at the Finnish National Opera, Dance House Helsinki, Helsinki Festival, Zodiak - Center for New Dance, Svenska Teatern, Kiasma Theatre, Theatre Avoimet Ovet, Q-theatre, Kouvola City Theatre, and numerous smaller venues. In recent years, Erlin has focused primarily on permanent public art and architectural lighting. She has worked as a designer on permanent public artworks and participated in light festivals and events across Finland with temporary installations. Her most recognized works include the permanent light installation Together More (2018) on the facade of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) headquarters, the interactive light artwork Lastu at the Jyväskylä City Library (2019), and Nexus (2021), a light piece for the Hakametsä tram stop in Tampere. In 2023, she co-created the light and sound installation Flumen for a daycare center facade in Kemi with Heini Myllyoja. One of her latest projects is Kolmikehrä (2024), a concrete sculpture for a roundabout in Vaasa. Erlin has served as a curator for several light art exhibitions. She was part of the curatorial team for Hillitön valo – Boisterous Light at the Hyvinkää Art Museum (2023–2024), one of the museum's most successful exhibitions. She has also curated the Espoo Visual Festival (2019), the Vallisaari light art event (2018), and the Flash 1 and Flash 2 light art events. Erlin has also been active in various expert roles in the arts. Alongside her artistic work, she has served as project manager and coordinator for international EU projects (TTT in EU, LPT in EU), the Snowball networking event at the Shanghai World Expo, and the international festival Amorph14!. She is currently the art coordinator for the Vantaa light rail project.
