Michael Lee Nirenberg is an artist, designer, filmmaker, director, writer base in New York. His subjects have included history, subculture, the environment and the film industry.

Career

As a Director and Producer, Nirenberg has completed short films, music videos, and a feature length documentary; Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story (2014). Back Issues is a film about Larry Flint and the various people that helped create Hustler Magazine. Nirenberg's father William Alan Nirenberg aka "Bill Alan" was the magazine's art director during the magazine's peak era.

Nirenberg began writing in the 2000's, publishing essays, interviews, and criticism on music, technology, and culture. He contributed to outlets including the HuffPost, PopMatters, and Dangerous Minds, conducting interviews with artists and cultural figures. He authored a now-defunct environmental blog title "Against Nature", which focused on environmental activism and advocacy.

Nirenberg's first book is Earth A.D. The Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities that Fought Back (2020), (Process Media). The book is an oral history examining two Superfund sites in the United States and the communities affected by industrial pollution.

Nirenberg's second book Cinematic Immunity: An Oral History of New York Filmmaking as Told by the Crews That Got Shot, is scheduled for release in February 2026 through Feral House Publishing . The book focuses on New York film-making from the 1950's through 1990, a period which encompasses the New Hollywood era of film-making.
