Moon Walk is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language musical comedy film written, directed, and produced by Manoj N. S. in his directorial debut. Produced by Behindwoods Productions, the film stars Prabhu Deva in the lead role and features composer A. R. Rahman in an extended acting appearance, marking his debut as an actor in a feature film.[1]
The project is widely noted for reuniting Rahman and Deva for the first time in over 25 years, following a series of successful collaborations in the 1990s such as Kadhalan (1994), Love Birds (1996), and Minsara Kanavu (1997).[2] The film is designed as a light-hearted family entertainer that integrates music, dance, and situational comedy as its core narrative elements.[3]
Synopsis
Moon Walk follows a comedic narrative set within the world of contemporary film production. The story revolves around Babootty (Prabhu Deva), a cheerful film choreographer known for his vibrant energy. The plot takes a meta-fictional turn when Babootty must work with a demanding and "angry" film director, played by A. R. Rahman. The film emphasizes humour-driven situations supported by elaborate song-and-dance sequences. According to the filmmakers, the narrative is intended to appeal to a multi-generational audience by blending nostalgic references with modern comedic tropes.
Cast
The film features an ensemble cast including several prominent actors from the Tamil and Malayalam film industries:[4]
- Prabhudeva as "Babootty", a young film choreographer.
- A. R. Rahman as himself, an "angry young film director" (Acting debut).
- Yogi Babu in 16 roles including "Dubai Mathew", "Aattukkaal Azhagu Rasa", and "Kavarimaan Narayanan" (Babootty's Ethiri No. 1).[5]
- Aju Varghese as "Lord Djokovic" (Babootty's cousin).
- Arjun Ashokan as "Luna" (Babootty's cousin).
- Satz as "Jasmine" (Babootty's friend).
- Deepa Akka as "Karpoorazhagi" (Babootty's mother).
- Sushmitha Nayan as "Silk" (Babootty's 1st girlfriend).
- Nishma Chengappa as "Nagma" (Babootty's 2nd girlfriend).
- Swaminathan as "Periya Pannai" (Babootty's grandpa).
- Dr. Santhosh Jacob as "Thavasi" (Babootty's father).
- Javed Khan King as "Raj Babbar" (Babootty's Ethiri No. 3).
- Redin as "Kannu Kutty" (Babootty's Dheivam).
- Mottai Rajendran as "Mallikarjun" (Babootty's Ethiri No. 2).
Production
Development
The project was first announced in early 2024 under the tentative title #ARRPD6. The collaboration sparked significant media interest due to the lead pair's historical influence on Indian film music and dance during the 1990s.[6] It is the maiden feature film venture of Behindwoods Productions, a company that previously specialized in entertainment journalism and award ceremonies.[7]
Director Manoj N. S. developed the screenplay with an emphasis on "clean comedy" and high production values for the musical segments. The title Moon Walk was officially revealed in June 2024 as a tribute to the legendary dance move popularized by Michael Jackson, which significantly influenced Prabhu Deva's early career.
Filming
Principal photography commenced in May 2024 in Kunamangalam, Kozhikode, Kerala. This first schedule covered major outdoor and indoor sequences. Subsequent filming took place in Chennai, with a focus on locations along the East Coast Road (ECR). By October 2024, the primary "talkie" portions of the film were completed, followed by a rigorous post-production phase in late 2025 to manage the visual effects required for Yogi Babu’s 16 roles.[8]
Music
The film’s music and background score are composed by A. R. Rahman. The soundtrack marks a notable milestone in Rahman’s career, as he has sung all five songs in the album himself — a first for the composer.[9][10]
The album consists of five songs, each centred around themes such as happiness, friendship, love and celebration. Some songs feature extensive choreography by Prabhu Deva, with reports noting prolonged rehearsal periods for certain dance sequences.[11]

Marketing and Release
The promotional campaign for Moon Walk emphasized its ensemble cast and the novelty of its musical score. In December 2025, the production house released a "Mini Cassette" format—a curated digital and physical musical presentation featuring all five tracks to build anticipation for the audio launch. The official audio launch took place in January 2026 in Chennai, coinciding with A. R. Rahman's birthday.
The worldwide theatrical distribution rights were acquired by Romeo Pictures in May 2025. The film is scheduled for a pan-Indian release in May 2026, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.[12]
