Mridul Kumar (born 9 April 1969) is an Indian diplomat and a career officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). He has served as the Ambassador of India to Switzerland since June 2023, with concurrent accreditation to Liechtenstein.[1][2][3][4][5]
Kumar's early diplomatic assignments included postings at the Embassy of India in Egypt (1994–1996) and the Embassy of India in Morocco (1996–1999). He later served in the United Kingdom (2002–2005). From 2009 to 2012, he was Consul General of India in Cape Town. In 2018, Kumar was appointed High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, serving until 2021.[4][6]
Early Life and Education
Kumar was born and educated in Delhi. He graduated in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 1990. He later attended the Foreign Service Programme at Balliol College, University of Oxford (2000–2001) and completed a leadership and management programme at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge in 2013.[4]
Career
Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Kumar worked as a probationary officer in the Indian Railways (Signals and Telecommunication) during 1991–1992. He entered the IFS in 1992 and has held postings in Indian missions abroad as well as assignments at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.[4]
At the Ministry of External Affairs, Kumar has worked in divisions dealing with the United Nations and Western Europe. He served as Deputy Chief of Protocol (2005–2007) and later as Director in the office of the Minister of State for External Affairs and Information & Broadcasting (2007–2009). Before his appointment in Bern, Kumar served as an Additional Secretary at headquarters with responsibilities connected to European affairs.While posted in the United Kingdom, he also served as India's representative to the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization.[4]
From 2013 to 2018, he headed the Gulf & Hajj Division, coordinating arrangements related to the Hajj during parts of that period. He was also associated with preparations for international language and cultural events held in 2015, including the World Sanskrit Conference in Bangkok and the World Hindi Conference in Bhopal.[4][7]
Kumar assumed office as Ambassador of India to Switzerland in June 2023 and was concurrently accredited to Liechtenstein. During his tenure, he has participated in diplomatic and economic engagements involving India and Swiss stakeholders, including events linked to international policy and business forums. He has also been associated with developments related to the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, signed in March 2024.[4][8][9][5][10][11][12]
