Naren Shetty (born 27 January 1987) is an Indian ophthalmologist. He is the Director and Head of the Cataract and Refractive Lens Services department at Narayana Nethralaya Eye Hospital. His work focuses on cataract and refractive surgeries, artificial intelligence applications in ophthalmology, and technologies for low-vision rehabilitation.[1]
Biography
Naren Shetty was born in Mangaluru, Karnataka, in 1987. He completed his MBBS from Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Medical College, Dharwad, in 2008, and earned a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology from Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru, in 2014.
In 2025, Shetty obtained a PhD from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, where his doctoral research focused on the optical performance of natural and intraocular lenses in Asian Indian eyes.[2]
He later joined Narayana Nethralaya,[1] where he leads the Cataract and Refractive Surgery department. His clinical work combines surgical precision with research into improving postoperative visual outcomes and patient accessibility.
Achievements and legacy
Shetty has contributed to integrating advanced digital technologies in ophthalmology, including the development of augmented reality powered devices for individuals with low vision.[3][4]
He has been active in public outreach and community health initiatives, leading cataract screening and awareness programs through Narayana Nethralaya’s charitable foundation.[3][5][6]
In 2024, Narayana Nethralaya, under the guidance of Dr. Naren Shetty, collaborated with Vision-Aid India to launch a new Vision Aid Resource Center in Bengaluru, aimed at improving access to rehabilitation technologies for the visually impaired.[5][7]
Shetty has promoted awareness of glaucoma and eye donation through campaigns such as the “Sight Saver Run” and public talks during World Glaucoma Week.[8][6]
