Nikki Perez is an American politician and social worker serving as the mayor of Burbank, California, since December 16, 2024.[3] She was elected to the Burbank City Council in 2022 and, in 2025, was recognized as the city’s youngest mayor and its first Indigenous (K'iche') and openly LGBTQIA+ mayor.[1][2]

Early life

Perez was born and raised in Burbank to parents who immigrated from El Salvador and Guatemala. She attended local Burbank Unified School District schools before earning dual bachelor’s degrees in psychology and music performance from the University of California, Riverside, and a Master of Social Welfare from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs in 2018.[1][2]

Career

Before elected office, Perez worked in social services and public policy, including roles with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and as a communications director in the California State Assembly. She also managed Kids First, a City of Los Angeles program supporting unhoused students in the San Fernando Valley, and has served as an Associate Clinical Social Worker with youth and families.[1]

Perez won a seat on the Burbank City Council in 2022 with a record vote total and served as vice mayor in 2023–2024. During the annual reorganization meeting on December 16, 2024, the council selected her as mayor for a one-year term.[2][3] She continues to serve on the council and as mayor as of October 2025.[5]

Awards

Noted by UCLA Luskin as the youngest, first Indigenous and first openly LGBTQIA+ mayor in Burbank history (2025).[2]
