Patrick Rampelotto is a designer born in 1978 in Vipiteno/Sterping, Italy, whose work is known for challenging the disciplinary distinction between art and design [1]. He completed his studies under the supervision of Borek Sipek at the University of Applied Arts of Vienna and worked for Eoos before starting out as an independent designer [2].

Industrial design

Rampelotto designed the Pilot for Quinze & Milan in 2012 with Fritz Pernkopf [3]. The standout characteristic of the bar stool is that it can be assembled without tools, since the wooden legs can be screwed directly into the seating surface[4]. The specifics of these original manufacturing and construction details are depicted in the last edition of the book "Chair Anatomy" issued in 2023 by Thames and Hudson[5].

Rampelotto has also designed products for companies such as Lobmeyer [6], Geba [7] or Interio [8].

Collectible design

The opulent ornemental aesthetics and the craftmanship of Bořek Šípek, the Czeck architect and designer that supervised Rampelotto at the University of Applied arts of Vienna, have had a strong influence on his work. Rampelotto also quotes the Austrian artist Franz West as being influential to its approach of functional objects and their possible "emancipation", meaning their transformation into works of art. [9].

Rampelotto's practice is also rooted in the reinterpretation and appropriation of famous traditional figures, such as Adolf Loos. Rampelotto reinterpreted his "Knieschwimmer" of 1906 - which Loos incidentally also copied out of a 1898 design by William Birch [10].

The experimental use of trophy cups is at the core of his "cultural piracy practice" [11]. His trophy lamps, considered its most famous pieces[12], are one-off scultural light objects made out of manufactured goods. They have been exhibited internationaly [13] [14], lately also in an installation realised in collaboration with the austrian artist Peter Sandbichler [15].

His solo show at the Museum of Applied Arts of Vienna [16] displayed a series of experimental works under the title "Adventures in Foam". The exhibition featured a video incorporating quotes of the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss book "La pensée sauvage" [17] [18]. When asked about the similarities between an artist and an adventurer, Rampelotto replied "They are both on a mission..." [19].

His work has been acquired by museal institutions such as the Hofmobiliendepot, the Wien Museum [20] and the Museum of Applied Arts of Vienna (MAK) [21].
