Paul F. Engstrom (died December 26, 2025) was an American physician and medical oncologist associated with Fox Chase Cancer Center for almost five decades. He was known for work in cancer prevention and control, including screening and tobacco-cessation efforts, and for building community-based approaches intended to broaden access to prevention services and clinical trials.[2][3]
Early life and education
Engstrom grew up in rural Minnesota in a family of physicians.[3] He earned a BA from St. Olaf College (1954) and an MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School (1962).[4] His postgraduate training included internship (1963), residency at University of Minnesota Hospitals (1965), and a Public Health Service traineeship in medical oncology (1967).[4] The Fox Chase profile and later accounts describe early training experiences in epidemiology and public health (including a program at the California Department of Public Health) that influenced his later focus on prevention and population-based approaches to cancer control.[4][2]
Career
Engstrom joined the American Oncologic Hospital and the Institute for Cancer Research (predecessors of Fox Chase) in 1970, when he was one of three physicians on the medical staff.[2] He remained at Fox Chase for nearly 50 years.[2]
Engstrom helped establish a cancer prevention and control program at Fox Chase in 1979, with work emphasizing screening and smoking cessation at a time when oncology was largely oriented toward treatment rather than prevention.[2][3][5] He also worked on partnerships with community hospitals and programs intended to expand access to prevention services, early interventions, and clinical trials outside academic medical centers, with attention to health disparities as a barrier to care.[2][3]
In clinical practice, he focused on malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract and neuroendocrine tumors, and provided second-opinion services through Fox Chase partner sites.[4][2]
Professional service
Engstrom was a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and served on multiple NCCN committees over his career, contributing to guideline development.[2] The archived Fox Chase profile lists his service on the NCCN Board of Directors and on guideline-related panels including Colon/Rectal/Anal Cancers and Neuroendocrine Tumors, among others; it also describes him as chair of the NCCN colorectal/anal guideline panel in his clinical profile statement.[4]
His advisory and service work also included roles connected with cancer prevention and screening activities associated with organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Cancer Society.[2][5]
He participated in international cancer control efforts, including an NIH-funded joint project related to tobacco control policy in Russia and work in Canada on a national cancer-control decision-making framework.[2]
Awards and honors
Engstrom received multiple professional honors, including:
- Distinguished Service Award, American Cancer Society (2009).[6]
- Distinguished Achievement Award, American Society of Preventive Oncology (2010).[7]
- Annual Clinical Care Achievement Award, Association of Community Cancer Centers (2013).[5]
- Prevent Cancer Foundation Laurels Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Prevention (2018).[8]
He was appointed the inaugural holder of the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Chair in Cancer Prevention (2012–2019), according to Fox Chase’s endowed-funds listing.[9]
Legacy
A 2020 article in Cancer Prevention Research honored Engstrom’s contributions to the cancer prevention field.[10]
To honor his legacy, members of the Fox Chase community established the Paul F. Engstrom Professorship in Oncology; the obituary reports that Igor Astsaturov has held the professorship since 2023.[2]
Death
Engstrom died on December 26, 2025, at age 89.[2]
