Paulo Gonçalves is a Swiss-based academic, researcher, and professor of system dynamics and management at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano. His work integrates system dynamics, behavioral operations, and humanitarian logistics to study decision-making, capability development, and sustainability transitions in organizations and societies.[1]
Biography
Gonçalves earned an undergraduate degree in Mechanical-Aeronautical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, and a master’s in Energy Policy from the University of São Paulo and later completed a M.Sc. degree from the Massachussets Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Management Science and System Dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. After serving as a faculty member at the University of Miami Business School and at the MIT Sloan School of Management, he joined the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, where he became Professor of System Dynamics and Management and Director of Executive Programs.[2]
Academic career
At USI, Gonçalves currently directs USI's Executive MBA (USI EMBA). Previously, he founded the Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Logistics and Management (MASHLM), which trained humanitarian professionals in leadership, supply chain management, and systems thinking.[3] He has collaborated with international organizations including the International Organization for Migration, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the World Health Organization, contributing to studies on supply chain resilience, emergency preparedness, and the distribution of therapeutic foods in humanitarian contexts.
His efforts to connect academic research with real-world sustainability challenges have been profiled in Swiss national media, including Corriere del Ticino and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation’s RSI.[4][5] Some of his humanitarian initiatives and outreach in Africa were highlighted in the regional media coverage. A 2016 feature in Ticinonews reported on USI’s humanitarian outreach work in Kenya led by Gonçalves.[6]
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Gonçalves has participated in public policy initiatives in Switzerland. He served as a member of a Canton Ticino expert group supporting the regional police department in analytical reform and public-sector decision-making.[7][8] More recently, he led the 2023 Boston Sustainability Study Tour, organized by USI and hosted by Swissnex Boston, which connected Swiss executives and American researchers on climate and leadership themes.[9]
Research
Gonçalves’s research examines how organizations accumulate and erode capabilities over time, combining behavioral decision theory and system dynamics modeling. His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Production and Operations Management, Manufaturing and Services Operations Management, and System Dynamics Review. His 2011 article “Bodies of Knowledge for Research in Behavioral Operations” was selected among the ten most influential papers published in the first thirty years of the Production and Operations Management journal.[10] Recent work includes applications of system dynamics to humanitarian supply chains, risk governance, and sustainability transitions. His studies explore leakage and accountability in the distribution of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) in Ethiopia and model how public agencies can escape “capability traps” in long-term development programs.[1]
