Petland Canada is a Canadian pet and pet-supply retail chain operating in Western Canada. As of 2025, the company states that it operates 31 corporately owned locations with 5 franchised locations, and is "100% Canadian owned and operated."[1]
Overview
Petland Canada sells supplies for dogs, cats, birds, small animals, reptiles, and fish, and also offers services such as grooming, party rooms, and aquatic care. The company emphasizes its Canadian ownership and separate identity from international Petland entities. Through partnerships with local shelters Petland Canada stores offer adoptions of cats and kittens. Petland Canada sells small animals, such as hamsters, fish, birds, reptiles and rodents in their stores.[1]
According to a 2024 commentary in the Winnipeg Free Press, many pet stores in Manitoba, including Petland, stopped selling commercially bred dogs and cats more than a decade ago, while continuing to sell small animals and aquatic species.[2]
History
Petland Canada reports having operated for nearly 50 years.[1]. The first pet store owned by Robert and Barbara Brisette was in Osborne Village opened in June, of 1975. Three years later they acquired use of the Petland brand for Canada and rebranded their store to Petland and ran their business under the name Petland Canada. They went on to open new stores in the 1980's and 1990's in the city of Winnipeg. In the early 1990's, Petland Canada acquired complete ownership of the brand for use in Canada.
In the 2000's the number of franchisee stores increased, particularly in Calgary and Edmonton. The decision was made to buy back the franchise operations and expand the corporate ownership of stores. Over the years Petland stores have been a mix of franchisee store ownership and corporate store ownership. As of January 2026, there are 31 corporately owned stores and 5 franchisee owned stores in Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC).
In 2012, the Winnipeg Free Press reported that Petland’s three Winnipeg locations had stopped purchasing puppies and kittens from breeders and instead partnered with the Winnipeg Humane Society to facilitate adoptions.[3]
Public Profile
Petland Canada maintains an active e-commerce presence and regularly promotes sales, seasonal events, and care information for pets across its website (https://www.petland.ca) and social media channels.[1]
Distinction from Petland (U.S.)
Petland Canada is a separate and independent corporate entity from Petland, Inc., the U.S.-based pet store chain. While some controversies surrounding the global "Petland" name relate to practices in the United States, these may not apply to Canadian operations; current sourcing and policies for Petland Canada are not widely documented in independent publications.
