Pip Todd Warmoth (also written as Todd-Warmoth; born 5 October 1962) is a British painter specialising in orientalist travel painting and atmospheric landscapes. Based in London, he is known for his representational style that captures townscapes and landscapes from around the world, with works held in the collection of King Charles III and other prominent collectors.[1]
Early life and education
Todd Warmoth was born in Lincolnshire, England, into a highly artistic family. His father, Peter Todd RCA, was a painter, and his mother was a Royal Academy of Music pianist. From the age of five, Todd Warmoth studied music, focusing on the violin at the Royal Academy of Music under the tuition of Ralph Holmes and Brian Gipps.
By his late teens, painting became his primary focus due to the freedom and independence it offered compared to the structured life of an orchestral musician.[1] He studied Fine Art at the Camberwell School of Fine Art in London and completed a Master's degree in Painting from the Royal Academy Schools in 1988.
Career and style
After graduating from the Royal Academy in 1988, Todd Warmoth embarked on a three-month tour of Europe, studying and sketching major architectural and landscape sites. This journey, followed by travels in a modified Range Rover studio created by his father, marked the beginning of an itinerant practice that continues to define his work. The artist spends approximately four months each year travelling to capture inspiration for his paintings.[2]
Todd Warmoth's technique involves building up layers of glazes on board, creating translucent, atmospheric images with a sense of depth and serenity. While he originally worked en plein air, he now prefers to capture fleeting impressions through sketches and photographs, allowing greater mobility and flexibility in capturing architectural subjects and landscapes, even those requiring days of trekking at high altitude. His work has been compared to the great figurative masters J.M.W. Turner, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, and Jean-François Millet.
Art historian and writer Terence Rodrigues has noted Todd Warmoth's "gift for evoking architecture, whether a modest village church or street building or the nobler panorama of a grand urban skyline of domes, pinnacles, finials and fluted columns." Explorer Benedict Allen remarked that "There's a quality of stillness in Pip Todd Warmoth's work that calms and yet energises, carrying you to faraway lands, and beyond - to the everyday hopes and fears of those he portrays."

In 2023, Todd Warmoth created a portrait of King Charles III in honour of the Coronation, which was exhibited at Heathrow Airport's Windsor Suite VIP facility.
The late Sir David Tang, one of Todd Warmoth's most avid collectors, praised his work: "It's so refreshing nowadays to find good figurative and atmospheric paintings, which also have verisimilitude... it is a joy to return to an old-fashioned approach to painting: unfussed, technically accomplished and beautiful to look at."
