Ramona-Ioana Bruynseels (née Ramona Chirilă Lohan; born 14 February 1980) is is a Romanian jurist and politician who has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2024.

Born in Cluj-Napoca, Bruynseels is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School, specialising in management in public administration. Between 2015 and May 2019, she held various positions within the Romanian government, including that of secretary of state in the General Secretariat of the government. In 2019, he ran for president on behalf of the Humanist Power Party, obtaining 2.7% of the votes. In 2023, she joined the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, being elected deputy the following year. As a deputy, he is secretary of the Defence Committee and is part of the Budget Committee.

Early life and education

Ramona-Ioana Bruynseels was born on 14 February 1980 in Cluj-Napoca, the capital of Cluj County, in the Socialist Republic of Romania.

From 1998 to 2002, she attended the Faculty of Law at the Dimitrie Cantemir Christian University in Cluj-Napoca, later obtaining a master's degree at the same university, and a postgraduate course at the National Defence College - Academy of Higher Military Studies.[1][2]

Before moving to the United States, she lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she volunteered for an organisation specialising in caring for abandoned and HIV-infected children.[3] From 2014 to 2015, she completed a master's degree in public administration (MPA) at the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University in the United States,[4][5] where she was awarded the Raymond Vernon and Lucius Littauer special awards.[1] While in the United States, she met with then-US vice president Joe Biden.[6]

Political career

Early political acitivity

During the government of Mihai Tudose, Bruynseels headed the Directorate for Policy Coordination and Priorities, and he between 2015 and 2016 the communications specialist of former deputy prime minister Gabriel Oprea.[7] Beginning in July 2017, she was a state counselor and later a state secretary within the General Secretariat of the Government,[8] and from December 2018 a state counselor in the Personal Working Apparatus of prime minister Viorica Dăncilă until Bruynseels' resignation in May 2019.[9][10]

In June 2019, the Congress of the Humanist Power Party, founded by Dan Voiculescu in 2015, elected her chair of its Executive Bureau. At the same party congress, Bruynseels was unanimously nominated her as the party's candidate for the 2019 Romanian presidential election in November of that year,[11][12] with her candidacy being promoted television stations of the Intact Media Group trust founded by Voiculescu.[13][14][15] On 3 September 2019, she supported closer military cooperation between Romania and Russia.[16] In the first round of voting, Bruynseels received 2.6 per cent of the vote, finishing 7th, with incumbent president Klaus Iohannis ultimately defeating Viorica Dăncilă in the runoff and remaining president until his resignation in February 2025. On 29 January 2023, Bruynseels announced that she had joined the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).[17]

AUR and member of the Chamber of Deputies (2023–present)

In the 2024 Romanian parlamentary election on 1 December, Bruynseels was elected a member of the Champer of Deputies for the AUR in Cluj County, taking office on 21 December.[18] In the Champer of Deputies, she is a member of the Committee on Budget, Finance and Banks as well as Secretary of the Committee on Defence, Public Order and National Security. Bruynseels has since February 2025 been Vice-Leader of the AUR parliamentary group.[18]

Personal life

Bruynseels was previously married to Ioan Viorel Lohan with whom she separated in 2010 and divorced in 2017.[19] Bruynseels married in 2018 to Dominic Bruynseels, a former director of Banca Comercială Română and former CEO of First Bank after an alomst 10 years long relationship.[20] An Orthodox wedding ceremony took place in May 2019.[20][21]
