Rory John Gates (born May 23, 1999) is an American scholar and public policy analyst, best known as the only son of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and philanthropist Melinda French Gates. He is the middle child of the Gates family and has gained recognition for his academic achievements, public service career, and low public profile.

Early life and education

Rory was born in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in the Gates family's high-tech estate in Medina, Washington, nicknamed "Xanadu 2.0". His parents emphasized humility and discipline, enforcing household rules such as delayed access to technology and required chores.[1]

Gates attended Lakeside School in Seattle, the same prestigious private institution attended by his father and siblings. He later enrolled at the University of Chicago, completing a double major and master’s degree in an accelerated four-year program.[2] As of 2025, he is pursuing a Ph.D. at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C.

Name and significance

Melinda French Gates included the name John in her son’s full name, Rory John Gates, as a heartfelt tribute to her dear friend John Neilson. According to Melinda, the name was chosen the day before Neilson entered hospice care, underscoring the personal significance of this dedication.[2]

Career

Following his graduation from the University of Chicago, Rory John Gates began working in Washington, D.C., in roles centered on public policy, intelligence analysis, and national security. He has served as a congressional policy analyst, with a focus on economic and global development issues.[2]

Gates has also held research and analytical positions at several policy and security organizations. He worked as an analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency and later served as an open-source intelligence researcher at Advance Democracy, Inc., a nonprofit focused on authoritarian influence and disinformation.[3]

In 2024, Gates joined the bipartisan Afghanistan War Commission as a staff researcher. His work supports the commission’s efforts to examine U.S. involvement in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. He is also a policy fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute, where his focus includes Chinese political influence and psychological warfare campaigns.

As of 2025, Gates is concurrently pursuing a Ph.D. at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C. His academic research centers on the history and use of propaganda, psychological operations, and political radicalization in the United States since the Civil War.[4]

Personal life

Known for his reserved lifestyle, Rory Gates does not maintain a public social media presence. He made a rare public appearance in May 2024 when he accompanied his mother to a White House state dinner honoring the President of Kenya.[5]

His mother has described him as compassionate, intellectually curious, and committed to gender equality. In a 2017 *Time* essay, she called him a feminist and praised his moral compass.[6]

Inheritance and philanthropy

Despite being heir to one of the wealthiest individuals in history, Rory is set to inherit a modest sum. Bill Gates has publicly stated that each of his children will inherit approximately $10 million, with the remainder of his wealth dedicated to philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.[7]
