Tan Liang (Chinese: 谭亮; pinyin: Tán Liàng; English name: Roy) is a Chinese educator, currently serving as a Professor of Practice in the area of Management and Strategy, and Programme Director for the Customized Programme of Executive Education at the Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Hong Kong. He focuses on exploring an integrated organizational management system that bridges Eastern and Western approaches through deep engagement in global leadership and organizational transformation.[1]

Education

Tan received a Bachelor's degree in Statistics in 1999, and a Master's degree in Economics in 2002 from East China Jiao Tong University.

Career

In 2002, Tan began his career at Wanxiang Group in Shanghai, where he started in foundational human resources work, later advancing to the role of Director of the General Manager's Office.

In 2004, he joined L'Oréal Group, handling recruitment integration and gaining his first exposure to multinational corporate human resources management. He subsequently moved to the Maersk Group, where he served in HR Business Partner and Organization Development roles across shipping, logistics, and the China headquarters.

In 2008, he began his tenure at General Electric (GE) as the Greater China HR Manager for the Industrial and Consumer division and was promoted to Greater China HR Director later that same year. In 2010, he was promoted to Asia-Pacific HR Director for GE Lighting & Appliances. In 2014, he transferred to GE China as Chief Learning Officer and Dean of Crotonville. From July 2014 to early 2016, he also concurrently served as the region's Talent Officer.

In 2018, he joined Alibaba Group, where he took on several senior leadership positions, including Global Executive Dean of Alibaba Business School, Chief Human Resources Officer of Alibaba’s B2C e-commerce division, and Chief of Organizational Transformation and Talent Development for Taobao and Tmall Group.

In 2024, he moved into academia, joining the University of Hong Kong and serving as a Professor of Practice in the area of Management and Strategy at the Faculty of Business and Economics.[2]

Event

In 2024 May, Tan was invited to deliver a masterclass demonstration titled "Renewal Through Change in the Digital Age: Leadership-Driven Organizational Transformation" for the HKU MBA program. The session focused on how to steer organizations through complex and volatile environments with leadership at the helm, enabling seamless translation from strategy to organizational capabilities.[3]

In 2024 December, Tan was invited to participate in the Dragon Year Forum organized by the HKU Business School in Hangzhou, where he shared his latest insights on organizational transformation.[4]

In 2024, he taught the session on organizational capability building as part of the "Strategic Thinking and Business Model Innovation" module in the University of Hong Kong’s Global CEO Program.[5]

In 2025 March, he participated in the Greater Bay Area Future Salon and delivered a presentation titled "Transformational Leadership: Reshaping Organizational and Talent Capabilities in the age of AI."[6]

In 2025 November, he was invited to participate in the 2025 UK–Greater Bay Area Conference hosted by China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), where he delivered a keynote address on corporate global expansion.[7] [8]

In 2025 December, he was interviewed by the 21st Century Business Herald, where he shared his observations and reflections on Chinese enterprises expanding overseas. He suggested that small and medium-sized enterprises and young entrepreneurs must fully embrace AI while solidly building both globalization and localization capabilities.[9]
