Ryder Industries is a Western-owned electronic manufacturing services (EMS) company founded in Hong Kong in 1979. It is headquartered in Hong Kong, with major operations in Mainland China and Vietnam.[1]
History
Founding and early years
Swiss technologist Eric Winkler founded the company to design and build intelligent games based on microprocessors. Originally the company was called SciSys and in 1986 it was renamed Saitek.
The company set up its first in-house production line in 1984 to improve control of manufacturing standards, quality, and production know-how.
During the 1980s, China was opening up, and in 1991 the company registered a wholly owned subsidiary in Shenzhen. This plant began accepting Western OEM customers for outsourced manufacturing in 1996, establishing a new line of business.
Sale of branded products division and inland expansion
The manufacturing business grew strongly, and in 2007 the company sold its branded products division—including offices in Los Angeles, Bristol, Paris, and Munich.[2] The EMS business was subsequently renamed Ryder Industries.
In 2013, Ryder opened a larger plant near Xinfeng in Jiangxi province.[3] The facility was designed with green energy features including ground-source climate control, rainwater harvesting, solar electric panels, solar thermal water heating, and captured process heat. [4] [5]
Ryder later established its Advanced Manufacturing Hub in the Shenzhen plant, investing in automation technologies including unattended (“lights out”) plastic injection.[6] New machinery and processes were piloted in Shenzhen before being deployed in the larger inland plant.
Recent developments
Ryder has expanded its engineering capabilities, employing approximately 50 R&D engineers and 90 engineers to support Joint Design & Manufacturing (JDM) and DFX projects. Its fast prototyping services support customers in iterating quickly at the NPI Centre.[7]
In 2024, Ryder opened its first Vietnam facility in Ho Chi Minh City. Strong market demand has led to plans for a second, larger Vietnam plant scheduled to open in 2027.[8][9]

Business model
Ryder provides high-mix, low- to mid-volume EMS manufacturing and engineering services for Western OEM customers.[10][11] Its heritage as Saitek gives it a strong understanding of OEM priorities, and it operates with high intellectual property protection standards.[12]

Certifications
Ryder holds ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949 certifications. It is also approved to manufacture FDA Class III devices and holds a Silver rating from the Responsible Business Alliance.[13] [14]

Ryder operates three main facilities: two in Mainland China (Shenzhen and Xinfeng) and one in Vietnam near Ho Chi Minh City. A second Vietnam site is scheduled to open in 2027.
Leadership
Ryder is led by founder and Chairman Eric Winkler and CEO Henry Wu. Former CEO S.T. Lei sits on the Advisory Board alongside Vice Chairman Thomas Studd.
