Kirtankar Mrs. Sapna (Maharaj ) Sakhare-Veer is an Indian kirtan performer and social worker from Solapur district, Maharashtra, recognized for her devotional musical contributions as well as her role in supporting her family from a young age through spiritual performances.[1]
Early Life and Education:
Sapna Sakhare was born in Parewadi village, Karmala tehsil, Solapur district, Maharashtra. At the age of ten, she began performing kirtans to support her family after her father, Balasaheb Sakhare, became bedridden following a fall from an electricity pole. Sapna is the eldest of five daughters and balanced her education with frequent kirtan performances across Maharashtra. She studied at the Lakshmibai Vitthalrao Durange Vidyalaya and received spiritual training in kirtan at the H.B.P. Gayabai Maharaj Yadav's Institute in Alandi. She also trained in classical music and harmonium under Pt. Vishnubuva Solanki and in bhajan singing under Pandit Raghunathji Khandalkar.[1]
Career:
Sapna began performing kirtan at the age of fifteen. Over more than a decade, she has performed at events across Maharashtra and other Indian states. Her kirtans focus on spiritual teachings, biographies of saints such as Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram, social messages including women’s empowerment and the importance of education, and are often dedicated to supporting her family’s medical expenses.[1]
She hosted the program "Arogya Sanvad" during the Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage in 2025, sponsored by the Maharashtra Government.[2] The program was broadcast on Pudhari News.[3] Sapna's life and work are depicted in the short film "Sapna Ek Satya," produced by Doordarshan and directed by Vijay Bhingarde, aired on the DD Sahyadri channel in June 2020.[4]
Her story has also been covered by national and regional media outlets such as The Indian Express and Josh Talks Marathi.[5]
Notable Recognition:
In 2025, Sapna Sakhare was felicitated by Maharashtra Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao in Pune, who provided her with financial assistance for her family’s hardships and recognized her for cultural contributions.[1]
