Early life

Sean Weber‑Small is the son of music manager Elizabeth Weber and film, television producer Jon Small. In the 1970s, his mother married singer-songwriter Billy Joel. Weber‑Small spent most of his first 16 years living with them, which is later recounted in the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes.

Grateful Dead touring

Between 1985 and 1991, Weber‑Small worked as a live recording engineer (or “taper”) on numerous Grateful Dead performances. He is credited in the metadata of archived recordings for using professional analog-to-digital recording equipment, including modified Sony PCM‑F1 units and Schoeps microphones. His recordings are preserved in the Live Music Archive on archive.org, contributing to documentation of the band's touring history.

Career

Weber‑Small began working in television production in the late 1990s, serving as producer, director, and executive producer on a wide range of television and film projects. He produced and wrote the independent film Block 57 (2016), and now leads AGENC as President and Partner.

Public recognition

In 2025, Weber‑Small appeared in Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released on HBO/Max. In the documentary, he reflects on his upbringing as Billy Joel's stepson and its influence on Joel's early career.
