Serhii Makhno (May 21, 1981, Kyiv) is an architect, designer, ceramist, and collector of contemporary Ukrainian art and ancient ceramics. In 2003, he founded the studio of Ukrainian design, architecture, and ceramics MAKHNO Studio. In March 2016, he opened the Makhno Gallery, a gallery of object design, which existed until 2019. Currently, he is working on a project of the House-Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art and Ceramics near Kyiv as part of the Makhno Art Foundation, with the aim of compiling the most important artistic achievements of modern Ukraine, as well as generating new meanings, cultural phenomena, and pillars of Ukrainian identity.

He is known worldwide as the inventor of a unique style[1], which was later popularized as the basis of a new Ukrainian design.

Personal life and work

Serhii Makhno was born on May 21, 1981, in Kyiv into a family of workers. He has two younger brothers: Oleksandr and Andrii. Oleksandr works as an interior designer and is a junior partner at MAKHNO Studio. Since the age of 7, Serhii has been practicing karate, and at the age of 18, he received the title of Master of sports. At the age of 15, he became interested in graffiti. Later he was engaged in the design of shop windows, restaurants, and bars.

In 2003, he founded MAKHNO Studio, a company specializing in interior design, product design, and architecture. He has his own ceramic workshop.

Education

Serhii Makhno graduated from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUBA) with a degree in Architectural Environment Design in 2004, in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Family of Serhii Makhno

He is married for the second time. Together with his wife Vlada, a designer, they have two sons: Hikaru (born in 2015) and Tadao (born in 2017). Fascinated by Japanese culture, Serhii gave his younger sons Japanese names: Hikaru means light, Tadao is named in honor of the Japanese architect, Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Tadao Ando.

With his first wife, Alyona Ivanova, co-owner of Little Red Light, Serhii has a son, Ivan (born in 2003). Ivan dreams of becoming an architect, just like his father.

Hobbies

Serhii is inspired by Ukrainian ethnic heritage, arts and crafts, and Eastern culture. He collects Ukrainian ceramics and works of contemporary Ukrainian art. His collection includes works by Oleh Tistol, Serhiy Radko, Nazar Bilyk, Roman Mykhailov, Pavlo Makov, Tiberiy Silvashi, etc.

Serhii is also known as an avid traveler.

MAKHNO Studio

The studio's works are published in international media: ELLE[2], FRAME[3], ArchDaily[4], Dezeen[5], Wall Street Journal[6], and others. It has been awarded such global and national prizes as Red Dot Design Award[7], The International Property Awards, The Architecture MasterPrize[8][9][10], IDA Awards[11], SBID[12][13][14], Restaurant & Bar Design[15], Art Space[16], Interior goda[17].

MAKHNO studio is a member of the Society of British and International Interior Design[18], is listed in Forbes [19].

Product design

Serhii Makhno presented his first original object back in 2005. Since then, together with his team, he has been creating furniture, lighting, tiles, and decor in his own ceramic workshop. In 2017, he received the international "Best of the best" Red Dot Design Award for his signature ceramic tile FLAPJACK[20], and honorable mention - for ceramic tile TETRAPOD [21].

He periodically participates in international exhibitions and holds exhibitions in Ukraine.

In 2013, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his work, Serhii Makhno organized a personal exhibition of interior items "Life of Ideas" at the Shcherbenko Art Center. The exhibition was also accompanied by a book[22] and a movie of the same name[23].

In 2017, the studio presented the project "Transformation. Silence" project in Paris at Paris Design Week[24] and the same year at Dutch Design Week[25] in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

In April 2018, a joint exhibition with the Ukrainian artist Roman Mykhailov "Black Black Sea" was organized at the Makhno Gallery[26], which was then located at 26a Yevhenia Konovaltsia Street, Kyiv. All the objects-paintings and ceramic sculptures-were black and the opening was accompanied by a performance.

In January 2019, the Studio took part in Maison&Objet as part of the Ukrainian collective stand with the project "Ukrsavana"[27]. At the same time, the KHMARA lamp designed by Serhii was selected for the top trends zone of the exhibition and later became a global hit[28]. In April 2019, Serhii and his studio presented the Inside.Out project at their own 100-meter-long stand[29] at iSaloni.Salone del Mobile.Milano.Euroluce, one of the most important design exhibitions in the world, which is annually visited by about 400 thousand representatives of the industry. Here, with a composition of ceramic furniture and lamps, MAKHNO Studio is among the main trends of the exhibition[30].
