Shedrick Mitchell is an American organist, pianist, composer, producer, and music director whose career spans over 28 years across a wide array of genres, including jazz, gospel, R&B, classical, and reggae. Mitchell has performed and recorded with legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, and Jay-Z.

Early Life and Education

Mitchell was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where his grandfather and later his father served as pastors. His musical journey began at the age of nine, playing piano in church—a formative experience that deeply influenced his approach to music. Initially resistant, he grew into the role and soon began studying classical piano, learning the works of Bach, Debussy, Chopin, and Mozart.

Simultaneously, he studied gospel music and was influenced by artists such as James Cleveland, Milton Brunson, and Thomas Dorsey. A pivotal moment came when his uncle introduced him to jazz through Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, igniting a passion for improvisation and creative expression.

Mitchell moved to New York City to pursue music full-time, where he studied under acclaimed pianists Mulgrew Miller and John Hicks. He later attended Mannes School of Music) and immersed himself in the city's vibrant jazz scene, drawing inspiration from icons such as Kenny Kirkland, Oscar Peterson, and Harold Mabern.

Career

Mitchell’s professional breakthrough came after the death of Kenny Kirkland, when Mulgrew Miller recommended him for a spot in Kenny Garrett’s band. This opportunity led to international touring and a recording credit on Garrett’s album Simply Said.

Following this, Mitchell collaborated with several jazz luminaries including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Antonio Hart, Johnny Griffin, and Dianne Reeves.

Work with Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin

In 2003, Mitchell began working with Whitney Houston, accompanying her for nine years on major world tours, award shows, and televised performances including The Oprah Winfrey Show. He later worked with Aretha Franklin, appearing with her on Late Show with David Letterman, and performing at the White House for President Barack Obama.

Both Houston and Franklin are said to have had a deep appreciation for Mitchell’s musicianship, often remarking on how his playing allowed them to return to their gospel roots.

Collaborations with Popular Artists

Mitchell's versatility extended to mainstream R&B, soul, and hip-hop. He performed with Stevie Wonder at Super Bowl XL, contributed to the American Gangster soundtrack with Jay-Z, and served as co-producer and Music Director for Maxwell, contributing to the albums BLACK and SUMMERS.

Solo Work and Recent Projects

Mitchell has released multiple solo albums, including Time – Reflections – Distance (2020) and What Do You Say, the latter earning Grammy recognition. Since 2020, he has released nine studio projects, including Bedroom Eyes (2025).

As of 2024, he serves as the Musical Director and Arranger for Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy.

Mitchell is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He regularly teaches, mentors, and coaches emerging artists, continuing to emphasize the importance of musical excellence and spiritual grounding.
