Dr Simon Paul Selby is a British academic, former police officer, and community leader. He serves as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland for the South West of England.[1] He is also co-director of the Fenny Castle Project Company CIC, which is restoring a Norman motte-and-bailey site and developing a medieval history hub in Somerset.[2]

Education

Selby holds a PhD in Education from Bath Spa University, awarded in 2017. He also earned a Master's degree in Education, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and a degree in PSHE Education from Roehampton University.

Career

Policing and crime prevention

Selby served in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary from 1987 to 2012. He held operational policing roles and was later appointed Youth Strategy Officer and Crime Reduction Officer. In this role, he worked on youth engagement and crime prevention programs.

Following his policing career, Selby worked as a Student Officer Trainer with Wiltshire Police, delivering the Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) between 2020 and 2022.

Academic and community work

Selby has lectured at universities and colleges in criminology, law, and public service. He has presented academic research at conferences including the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and the University of Sussex.

Fenny Castle Project

Selby is co-director of the Fenny Castle Project Company CIC, a community project focused on the restoration of Fenny Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey site near Wells, Somerset.[3]

The project has involved archaeological studies, including a magnetometry survey conducted by the University of Bristol, and public engagement initiatives. ITV News West Country reported on the project in 2023, highlighting the rediscovery of the castle's original defensive structure and Selby's leadership in promoting local historical education.[2]

Public roles

Selby was appointed Honorary Consul of Poland for the South West of the United Kingdom in 2023.[1]
